Role Overview
[$COMPANY_NAME] is seeking a performance-driven Assistant Basketball Coach to join our competitive basketball program based in [$COMPANY_LOCATION]. The Assistant Coach will design and execute player development curricula, implement data-informed game strategies, and support head coach operational and recruiting objectives. This role requires demonstrated expertise in on-court coaching, strength & conditioning integration, analytics-driven scouting, and program administration.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement progressive player development plans covering skill acquisition, biomechanics-informed shooting mechanics, defensive footwork, and position-specific decision-making.
- Translate scouting intelligence and performance analytics into opponent game plans; prepare detailed scouting reports using video breakdown (Hudl, Synergy), shot charts, and opponent tendencies matrices.
- Assist the Head Coach in game-time strategy: substitution patterns, lineup optimization, timeout management, and in-game adjustments informed by advanced metrics (PAPM, offensive/defensive rating differentials, lineup plus/minus).
- Design and supervise practice plans with measurable outcomes—tempo drills, situational scrimmage scripts, and microcycle periodization to peak for targeted competitions.
- Manage player load and recovery protocols in collaboration with sports performance and medical staff; integrate GPS/heart-rate monitoring, readiness scores, and return-to-play plans.
- Lead recruiting operations: identify targets, evaluate film against predefined athletic and behavioral competency models, coordinate contact strategy, and manage compliance documentation.
- Mentor student-athletes on academic, behavioral, and career progression; maintain individualized development records and conduct quarterly performance reviews.
- Oversee equipment, travel logistics, and budgetary line items as delegated; maintain adherence to institutional policies, NCAA/NCAA-equivalent rules, or applicable governing-body regulations.
- Conduct regular video review sessions with players and coaches; maintain a searchable video library with tagging for plays, sets, and player actions.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Sports Science, Kinesiology, Coaching, Education, or related field, or equivalent professional coaching experience.
- 3+ years of experience as an assistant coach, graduate assistant, or comparable role with progressive responsibility at collegiate, professional, or elite youth levels.
- Proven track record in player development with documented examples of measurable performance improvements (shooting accuracy, defensive efficiency, vertical jump, speed/agility metrics).
- Strong understanding of sport-specific strength & conditioning principles and experience coordinating with performance staff.
- Working knowledge of video analysis tools (Hudl, Synergy, Sportscode) and analytics platforms; ability to create and present data-driven scouting reports.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for recruiting and away contests.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in Coaching, Sport Management, or related discipline.
- Experience recruiting successfully at the collegiate or high-performance level with demonstrated network and pipeline development.
- Certifications such as USA Basketball coaching certification, CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), or equivalent.
- Experience with athlete monitoring systems (GPS, Catapult), heart-rate variability monitoring, and sports science data integration.
- Familiarity with compliance systems and eligibility management for collegiate athletics.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Advanced competency in video analysis platforms: Hudl, Synergy, SportsCode; ability to tag and export clips for teaching and recruiting.
- Proficiency with analytics and visualization tools: Excel (pivot tables, VBA basic), Tableau or Power BI, R or Python for basic sports analytics workflows preferred.
- Experience producing and interpreting performance metrics: effective field goal percentage, turnover rates, assist-to-turnover, lineup plus/minus, player tracking statistics.
- Familiarity with athlete monitoring hardware and software: GPS units, accelerometers, HR monitors, and load-management platforms.
- Knowledge of play design and implementation using whiteboard software and digital playbook tools.
