Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Lead Autopsy Assistant to join our investigative team. In this critical role, you will oversee and coordinate autopsy procedures, ensuring thorough documentation, compliance with legal standards, and the implementation of best practices in forensic medicine. Your expertise will be pivotal in supporting forensic pathologists and enhancing the quality of our autopsy services.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage autopsy assistants and laboratory personnel, providing training and mentorship to enhance team performance and compliance with procedures.
- Coordinate all aspects of autopsy preparation, including case review, tissue sampling, and specimen management.
- Ensure accurate and detailed documentation of each autopsy, including pathological findings, technical procedures, and chain of custody.
- Collaborate with forensic pathologists to discuss findings and assist in the preparation of autopsy reports.
- Implement quality control measures to ensure the integrity of autopsy processes and adherence to legal standards.
- Participate in the development and revision of autopsy protocols and operating procedures.
- Act as a liaison between the forensic department and law enforcement agencies, legal representatives, and families.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in a forensic or clinical laboratory setting, with significant exposure to autopsy procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, pathology, and forensic science.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred:
- Certification as a Forensic Autopsy Assistant (or equivalent) is highly desirable.
- Experience working in a remote or virtual team environment.
- Familiarity with digital forensic tools and data management systems.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment and techniques specific to autopsy procedures.
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Understanding of relevant legal and ethical considerations in forensic autopsies.
