Yard Hostler Cover Letter Examples

Dear Ms. MacLeod,

I am excited to submit my application for the Yard Hostler position at Canadian National Railway. With five years of experience safely moving 100+ trailers daily at the CN intermodal terminal in Brampton, I am eager to bring my precision spotting, DOT compliance, and yard-planning expertise to your flagship Calgary logistics hub.

At Walmart Distribution Centre Balzac, I reduced trailer-shuttle cycle time by 12 % through a colour-coded bay-mapping system I created with the dock team, while maintaining a 99.7 % incident-free record across 8,000+ moves. Certified on Ottawa Yard Trucks and Kalmar Ottawa T2 spotters, I routinely handle 53-ft reefers, tankers, and double pups in winter conditions down to –35 °C, keeping radio contact with CP Rail switching crews and ensuring on-time outbound departures for clients such as Loblaw, Sobeys, and Canadian Tire. My pre-trip inspections caught 23 minor defects last year alone—preventing CSA violations and saving an estimated $40,000 in roadside fines and downtime.

CN’s commitment to sustainable, coast-to-coast supply-chain innovation aligns perfectly with my career goal of becoming a lead hostler trainer. I am inspired by your recent $100 M investment in Alberta intermodal capacity and the carrier’s “Zero Harm” safety culture; I would welcome the chance to contribute my passion for meticulous yard management and driver mentorship to keep CN’s Calgary hub running like clockwork.

I would value an interview to discuss how my track record of safety, efficiency, and teamwork can support CN’s operational excellence. Thank you for your time and consideration—I look forward to the possibility of helping move Canada’s goods safely and on schedule.

Sincerely,
Sarah Tremblay
