What began in 1960 as a seven-person firm in Philadelphia has blossomed into a nationally recognized engineering, management, and scientific leader. Urban Engineers was founded by Robert C. Olson, Edward J. D'Alba, and K. Yervant Terzian with a vision to turn complex problems into tangible solutions. Their initial focus on the burgeoning Interstate Highway System quickly established them as a key player in public works. Early projects, like the Delaware Expressway (I-95) and mapping underground utilities for the City of Philadelphia, laid the groundwork for a legacy of impactful infrastructure development. By 1969, a four-decade-long partnership with the Philadelphia International Airport began, cementing their role as an economic engine for the region.

Throughout the decades, Urban Engineers has embraced change and innovation. The 1980s and 90s saw the firm lead transformative projects like Philadelphia's Center City Commuter Rail Program, which reshaped the city's skyline. As technology evolved, so did Urban's approach, always striving to maintain the close-knit, 'family' atmosphere of its early days even as it expanded. A pivotal moment came in 2001 when the company became an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), reinforcing its commitment to its staff. This era also saw Urban take on 'mega' projects like the Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access in New York City, showcasing their capability to manage large-scale, complex endeavors.
