Salary/Position Classification

  • $30 Hourly, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime) - $10,000 sign-on bonus!
    • Sign-on bonus to be paid $5,000 at the start of employment, and the remaining $5,000 upon completion of the probationary period. If individual leaves before two years of service with the university, there is a payback schedule.
  • 40 hours per week

Purpose of Position

To provide UND Aerospace Maintenance Department with the mechanical skills and expertise required in maintaining a large fleet of aircraft used for flight training. Requires an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Issued A&P (Airframe and Power-plant) certificate and will be required to work under the UND Aerospace FAA Part 145 repair station certificate.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform FAA approved progressive inspections, 100 hr. inspections, 50 hr. inspections and Annual Inspections on fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft. (scheduled maintenance):
    • Perform scheduled inspections on fixed wing aircraft and rotor wing aircraft, in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, the Federal aviation regulations, and UND Aerospace maintenance policies and procedures manual. This includes annual inspection, 100 hour inspections, 50 hour inspection and progressive inspections.
    • Research and comply with FAA A.D.’s (Airworthiness Directives), manufacturers S.B.’s (Service Bulletins), S.L. (Service Letters) and regulatory requirements.
    • Determine time life limits and inspection intervals for aircraft components. - (55%)
  • Designated technician for FAA Repair Station OG5R092N:
    • Perform maintenance and inspection as required by the UND’s FAA approved Part 145 Repair Station #OG5R092N.
    • Comply with FAA Regulations pertaining to Part 145 Repair Stations.
    • Complete required documents, records and FAA reports.
    • Determine proper components and parts application.
    • Return aircraft to service after FAR 91.213.d deferrals, and Part 91 MEL (Minimum equipment list). - (15%)
  • Perform preventative maintenance and discrepancies (un-scheduled maintenance):
    • Correct aircraft discrepancies.
    • Troubleshoot and repair inoperative systems or components.
    • Read and follow manufacturer’s schematics and troubleshooting procedures.
    • Determine correct manufacturer part numbers for replacement for parts.
    • Perform sheet metal repairs: must be able to read and follow manufacturers “Structural Repair Manuals” and maintain a thorough knowledge of all applicable airframe structures and components. Inspect aircraft sheet metal structure for defects and repair damaged areas using precision hand tools, power tools, rivet guns, etc.
    • Conducted routine maintenance on hydraulic systems, landing gear and other mechanical equipment.
    • Perform powerplant repairs.
    • Repair aircraft components such as ignition systems (magnetos), starters, alternators, control valves, fuel systems, etc.
    • Perform aircraft weight and balance calculations.
    • Perform aircraft ground operations and engine performance checks.
    • Maintain and service aircraft propellers. - (10%)
  • Perform minor and major alteration and repairs:
    • Determine if a repair is a major or minor repair in accordance with the FAR’s.
    • Analyze and develop repair methods for structural damage in accordance with the FAR’s and advisory circular AC43-13.
    • Complete FAA form (337) for all major repairs and alterations.
    • Work with local FAA personnel to receive approval for major repairs or alterations.
    • Install STC’s (Supplemental Type Certificate) and complete all required FAA documentation. - (5%)
  • Accurately complete regulatory aircraft records, inspection forms and work orders:
    • Accurately complete all FAA required aircraft log books and UND work orders in accordance with the FAA part 43.
    • Use and complete all checklist lists items for scheduled inspections and special inspection items.
    • Record compliance with all FAA A.D.’s (Airworthiness Directives), manufacturers S.B.’s (Service Bulletins), S.L. (Service Letters) in the aircraft records.
    • Insure all required “return to service” entries are made in accordance with the FAR’s before an aircraft is approved for returned to service.
    • “Approve for return to service” all aircraft, airframe, engine, propeller, appliance or component that has undergone maintenance, preventative maintenance, rebuilding or alteration using your A&P certificate number and signature. - (10%)
  • Follow General Maintenance shop practices:
    • Follow all general shop safety practices.
    • Operate shop equipment such as diagnoses equipment, tensiometers, rivet guns, drill presses, lifts, grinders, metal brakes, metal shears, saws, sanders, scales, floor scrubbers and other equipment required to perform aircraft repairs.
    • Maintain proficiency in the operation of all support equipment used in our repair facility.
    • Supervise and train subordinates in the proper use of shop equipment.
    • Ensure work areas are clean and safe at all times.
    • Move aircraft in and out of aircraft hangars. - (5%)

Required Competencies

  • Good interpersonal/oral/written communication skills.
  • The ability to lift/move bulky or heavy objects, up to 75 pounds.
  • Attention to details.
  • Computer skills.
  • A high level of mechanical aptitude/competency with hands on work.
  • The able to read, understand, and follow technical publications, electrical schematics, and troubleshooting charts.
  • Ability to operate diagnosis equipment and analysis data.
  • Skills in operation of specialty equipment used to maintain aircraft.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates Degree; or High School Diploma and 3 years of directly related work experience.
  • An FAA A&P (Airframe & Powerplant) Certificate.
  • Currency requirement of FAR Part 65.83.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience as a certified A&P technician working in general aviation.
  • Experience working on Piper single and multi-engine aircraft, Cessna single engine aircraft, and rotary wing aircraft experience.
  • FAA Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician School education.
  • Experience with FAA 145 Repair Station.
