About the Company:

At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business. A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight. Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.

Meet the Team:

This team drives alignment and execution across Torc’s most mission‑critical technology domains, ensuring the platforms that enable safe autonomy and scalable compute are delivered with rigor and predictability. We translate safety strategy, compute platform needs, and system architecture decisions into clear, actionable technology roadmaps, working cross‑functionally with engineering, safety, autonomy, systems, infrastructure, and operations teams.

What You’ll Do:

As a Manager of Technical Product Management – Safety & Compute Platform, you will serve as a leader, manager, and coach for a team of TPMs supporting Torc’s safety‑critical and compute platform technology pillars. You will set the standard for TPM excellence in a highly cross‑functional, safety‑first environment.

  • Lead and develop TPMs responsible for programs spanning functional safety, SOTIF, compute platforms, and foundational infrastructure
  • Drive best practices in program planning, execution, dependency management, risk mitigation, and change management for safety‑critical, multi‑disciplinary initiatives
  • Own planning and execution for your team’s portion of the Safety & Compute Platform technology roadmap
  • Partner closely with engineering, safety, autonomy, systems, validation, hardware, and infrastructure leaders to align execution with corporate milestones and safety goals
  • Ensure dependencies and tradeoffs across hardware, software, compute, and safety initiatives are clearly understood and actively managed
  • Enable predictable delivery by proactively identifying risks, resourcing gaps, and integration challenges
  • Provide clear, executive‑ready communication on roadmap health, delivery status, safety implications, and key risks
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within your TPM team

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Experience coaching and developing a team of technical product, program, or project managers, ideally within platform, infrastructure, or safety‑critical domains
  • A strong track record of delivering large‑scale, cross‑functional programs involving complex technical and organizational dependencies
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or managing initiatives involving Functional Safety (FuSa), SOTIF, and Safety Case development and integration
  • Ability to drive alignment and execution for safety‑critical programs, ensuring safety requirements are traceable, integrated into roadmaps, and aligned with technical delivery
  • Familiarity with compute platform development, validation, and verification workflows, including experience coordinating or supporting Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) environments
  • Experience working effectively with executives and senior leaders across engineering, safety, autonomy, systems, and infrastructure organizations
  • Proven ability to establish and scale program management best practices, including dependency tracking, risk management, and change control
  • Strong understanding of dependency, risk, and change management in complex, safety‑ and performance‑driven environments
  • Excellent active listening, influence, and negotiation skills, with the ability to navigate tradeoffs across safety, technology, and business priorities
  • Ability to deliver clear, concise, and structured communication tailored to audiences ranging from engineers to executives
  • A desire to continue growing technical depth in safety‑driven development, compute platforms, and system‑level execution

Bonus Points!

  • Experience in the Autonomous Vehicle, robotics, or safety‑critical systems industry
  • Experience launching or managing cross‑functional programs with rigorous safety, regulatory, or reliability requirements
  • Familiarity with safety standards and frameworks (e.g., ISO 26262, SOTIF)

What began in 2005 as Torc Technologies, a venture by a group of Virginia Tech graduate students, has evolved into a leading name in autonomous vehicle technology. The mission from the outset was to continue their collegiate work on autonomous vehicle software, initially focusing on Tele-Operated Robotic Controls (TORC) and developing Level 4 autonomous technology. A significant early milestone came in 2007 when Torc, in partnership with Virginia Tech, secured third place in the DARPA Urban Challenge. This achievement involved their Ford Escape, 'Odin,' autonomously navigating 60 miles of urban and off-road environments.

The company's journey continued with impactful projects, including a 2010 partnership with Virginia Tech for the National Federation of the Blind's Blind Driver Challenge, which earned them the National Instruments' 2010 Application of the Year. This project saw a blind driver independently operate Torc's modified Ford Escape on the Daytona Speedway in 2011. Torc's expertise also extended to defense, developing autonomous solutions like the Ground Unmanned Support Surrogate (GUSS) to assist military personnel. Over the years, Torc has been involved in various defense and heavy equipment applications, and participated in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. A pivotal moment arrived in March 2019 when Daimler AG, through Daimler Trucks North America, acquired a majority stake in Torc Robotics. This partnership shifted Torc's primary focus to commercializing autonomous trucks for long-haul applications in the United States. Torc is now an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG. The company has since expanded its operations, opening an engineering office in Austin, Texas, and a Technology and Development Center in Stuttgart, Germany in 2022, as well as facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Montreal, Canada. Torc continues to advance its 'physical AI,' enabling self-driving trucks to perceive, understand, and act in the real world, with a commercial launch targeted for 2027.
