Overture Maps Foundation (overturemaps.org) is dedicated to building open map data that powers innovative map applications and spatial analysis. Our mission is to support and enhance the capabilities of map application developers by providing high-quality, accessible map data.

Overture was started in December 2022 by four founding partners: AWS, Meta, Microsoft and TomTom. It has grown to over 35 organizations. To fulfill its mission of creating and maintaining high quality open map data, Overture consists of collaborative teams composed of engineers and data scientists from the member companies. The Overture staff acts to coordinate the project and ensure that it has clear goals and objectives and a plan to accomplish those goals.

Job Description

This is a rare opportunity to be at the forefront of a revolution in map data. We’re seeking a dynamic and collaborative Executive Director to lead Overture Maps Foundation. This isn't just another leadership role; it's a chance to fundamentally change how map data is built and consumed globally. You will need to have a strong background in the geospatial and mapping industry to be able to lead this role. Overture thrives on collaboration, so your superpower must be the ability to forge consensus among diverse stakeholders and then galvanize a large, dispersed team to move decisively towards shared goals. As Executive Director, you'll be responsible for our strategic direction, operational excellence, and the overall success of Overture Maps Foundation. Reporting to the Overture Steering Committee, you'll work hand-in-hand with them to shape project goals and priorities and to drive Overture’s mission to change the mapping world through open map data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a compelling vision for Overture Maps Foundation, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and objectives.

  • Industry Expertise: Leverage deep familiarity with the global geospatial and mapping industry to identify opportunities, anticipate challenges, and guide the foundation's strategic direction.

  • Collaborative Approach: Foster a collaborative environment, building strong relationships with member organizations, working groups, and the broader community.

  • Operational Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of Overture Maps Foundation, ensuring efficient resource allocation and effective execution of projects. Overall responsibility for all Overture employees and contractors.

  • Technical Leadership and Oversight: Engage deeply with the highly technical aspects of Overture's work. Maintain a strong grasp of the technologies, methodologies, and challenges within the geospatial domain.

  • Financial Stewardship: Develop and manage the foundation's budget, ensuring financial sustainability and accountability.

  • Community Engagement: Cultivate a vibrant and engaged community of map application developers, data providers, and other stakeholders.

  • Advocacy and Outreach: Represent Overture Maps Foundation at industry events, conferences, and other forums, promoting the foundation's mission and building strategic partnerships.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A passion for the mission of creating an open map data ecosystem.

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Business Administration). Advanced degree preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in the geospatial and mapping industry, with a demonstrated track record of leadership and achievement.

  • Deep understanding of map data, spatial analysis, and related technologies.

  • Proven ability to build and lead collaborative teams, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills.

  • Visionary thinker with the ability to develop and articulate a compelling vision for the future of Overture Maps Foundation.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with open-source projects and communities.

  • Established network of contacts within the geospatial and mapping industry.
