About Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

We are the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), a state agency dedicated to managing California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend. Formerly known as the Department of Fish and Game, we have a long history dating back to 1870, evolving to meet the changing needs of our state's natural environment. Our mission is to preserve these resources for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public, ensuring they remain for future generations.

We are responsible for over 1.1 million acres of fish and wildlife habitat, managing 711 properties throughout the state. Our team consists of scientists, wildlife officers, and administrative professionals who work collaboratively to protect our state's unique biodiversity. From the rugged coastline to the high Sierra, we are on the ground, enforcing laws, conducting research, and restoring habitats. We believe in a science-based approach to conservation and value the input of all Californians in our decision-making processes. Whether it's managing fisheries, protecting endangered species, or providing recreational opportunities, we are committed to the stewardship of California's natural heritage.
