Our story began in 1937 when our founder, Roy Richards, started a company to erect power poles with a simple yet profound goal: to bring electric light to his grandmother's home. This ambition evolved, and on March 23, 1950, he founded Southwire with just three secondhand machines and 12 dedicated employees. From these humble beginnings, we have grown into a global force in the electrical industry, yet we remain a private, family-owned company, still headquartered right down the road in Carrollton, Georgia. In 1963, we revolutionized the industry with the invention of the Southwire Continuous Rod (SCR®) system, which allows for the continuous casting of copper and aluminum rod. Today, more than half of the copper rod produced worldwide is made using our SCR® technology.

We manufacture half of the cable used for the transmission and distribution of electricity across the United States, and one out of every three new homes built in the country contains our electrical wiring.
