We are one of the world's leading developers, manufacturers, and suppliers of building wire and utility cable, as well as the tools and equipment used in their installation. Our story began in 1937 when our founder, Roy Richards, started a company to erect power poles with a simple yet profound goal: to bring electric light to his grandmother's home. This ambition evolved, and on March 23, 1950, he founded Southwire with just three secondhand machines and 12 dedicated employees. From these humble beginnings, we have grown into a global force in the electrical industry, yet we remain a private, family-owned company, still headquartered right down the road in Carrollton, Georgia. Our commitment to innovation has been a cornerstone of our success. In 1963, we revolutionized the industry with the invention of the Southwire Continuous Rod (SCR®) system, which allows for the continuous casting of copper and aluminum rod. Today, more than half of the copper rod produced worldwide is made using our SCR® technology.

Our products are an integral part of modern life. We manufacture half of the cable used for the transmission and distribution of electricity across the United States, and one out of every three new homes built in the country contains our electrical wiring. Our wire also plays a crucial role in the manufacturing of other essential products, such as automotive wiring harnesses and electrical motors. We are constantly striving to improve our offerings, studying how they are used in the field and listening to the needs of our customers to find new and better ways to solve industry challenges.
