About sony

We are Sony Music Publishing (“SMP”), the #1 global music publisher, and we're dedicated to advancing the artistry of the world's greatest songwriters and composers, a commitment we've upheld for over 25 years. Our approach is to design a suite of services that amplify opportunities, build connections, and provide support at every stage of a songwriter's career. We are proud to be a member of the Sony family of global companies. Our journey began in 1995 when Sony/ATV was established through a joint venture with Michael Jackson, bringing together the original Sony Music Publishing and Jackson's ATV Music. A significant part of ATV Music was the Northern Songs catalogue, which Jackson had acquired in 1985, owning the rights to all the songs John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote during their time with the Beatles.

Over the years, we've grown by acquiring other significant catalogues. In 2007, Sony/ATV acquired Famous Music, which included some of the great American film and television catalogues. A major step was in 2012 when Sony, along with a group of investors, purchased EMI Music Publishing. By 2016, Sony acquired the Michael Jackson Estate's 50% share of Sony/ATV, making us a wholly-owned Sony company. In 2018, we bought out the remaining ownership interests in EMI, cementing Sony/ATV's status as the world's leading music publisher. After 25 years, in 2021, we returned to the Sony Music Publishing name, introducing a new brand identity and a revitalized mission. This rebranding, under the leadership of Chairman & CEO Jon Platt, signified an important step in our evolution, further aligning our business with Sony's powerful entertainment brands and reflecting Sony's identity as “A Creative Entertainment Company with a Solid Foundation of Technology.” Our ethos is 'every voice matters', and we strive to elevate the vision and goals of songwriters, embracing the power of songwriting to connect cultures and bring people together. We have always supported the careers of songwriters and continue to defend their rights.
