Established in 2001 in the United Kingdom, the company has since expanded its operations to the United States and Australia, solidifying its international presence. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Marubeni Corporation, a Fortune Global 500 company, SmartestEnergy benefits from substantial financial backing and stability, ensuring its position as a secure and reliable long-term partner for its clients. The company's core mission is to make the journey to 100% renewable energy accessible and manageable for a diverse range of customers, including business consumers, electricity generators, and strategic partners. By offering flexible business models, unbiased advice, and innovative retail solutions, SmartestEnergy addresses the unique needs of each client at every stage of their sustainability journey.

The company operates across several key business areas: purchasing energy through corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), selling energy with a focus on providing a bankable route-to-market for renewable assets, and engaging in trading and origination, which includes carbon offsetting. SmartestEnergy is distinguished by its commitment to not owning any fossil fuel or generation assets, instead contracting with independent renewable generators and accessing the wholesale market.
