Overview: This position is responsible for the financial, editorial management, and development of proprietary journals or small society titles in a select discipline or disciplines. The Associate Publishing Editor position is expected to manage a workload of approximately 15-20 titles and assist with journal and department tasks for the team. We are looking for a candidate who is eager to learn about and grow within the academic publishing industry and is able to quickly pick up new information, think critically and creatively, and engage meaningfully with the daily work.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following
Support Publishing Editor(s), Publishers, and greater team as needed, including journal support, managing customer service queries, reports, and meeting minutes
Day-to-day management of journals, answering internal and external queries in a timely and polite manner
Manage a portfolio of up to 20 journals made up of mostly proprietary or smaller society titles
Develop journal strategy with feedback from manager:
Consult with Manager on ongoing journal goals progress, challenges, and potential ethics situations
Use editorial development strategies to support journal goals
Collaborate with Marketing Managers throughout the year on changing needs of journals
Manage contracts and effectively execute agreements with Editors, Societies, and affiliated personnel or organizations outside of Sage
Represent Sage externally, including but not limited to hosting and presenting in Editorial Board meetings
Develop Editorial Board and journal community
Manage Special Collections
Work with other departments as-needed
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Required
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
At least one year of publishing experience required, preferably with an academic or scientific journal publisher
Demonstrated excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
Working knowledge of the journal publication process
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, Teams, and PowerPoint
Effective public speaking and interpersonal skills
Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills
Strong attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to follow directions, learn, and understand departmental procedures required
Understanding of how social science research is conducted
Preferred
Previous experience as editorial assistant, associate/assistant editor, managing editor, production editor, or related positions
Intermediate Excel skills
Familiarity with HTML
