About Regions Hospital

What began in 1872 as a modest operation in a stone mansion at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Colbourne Street has since blossomed into one of the most respected medical institutions in the Midwest. In its earliest days, known as City and County Hospital, the facility was staffed by just two doctors, with a single ambulance pulled by two horses to bring in patients. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a long and storied journey of growth and unwavering commitment to the community. Over the decades, the hospital evolved, reflecting the changing needs of the people it served. It became Ancker Hospital in 1923, then moved to its current location in 1965 and was renamed St. Paul-Ramsey Hospital. After another name change to St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center in 1977, it finally became Regions Hospital in 1997, a name now synonymous with exceptional care. This evolution wasn't just in name, but in capability, expanding from a small local facility to a cornerstone of health and wellness for Saint Paul and beyond.

Today, Regions Hospital stands as a leading full-service, private nonprofit teaching hospital, proudly part of the HealthPartners family since 1993. It is a pillar of the community, serving as the largest private employer in St. Paul and a critical healthcare provider for Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The hospital is renowned for its advanced specialty care, operating as an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center for both adults and children—a distinction held by only a few hospitals in the state. Its nationally recognized Burn Center was one of the first in the country, and its comprehensive Stroke Center was the first of its kind in Minnesota. With over 550 beds, thousands of dedicated employees, and state-of-the-art facilities, Regions handles tens of thousands of admissions and over 90,000 emergency visits annually. Guided by a 'Head + Heart, Together' philosophy, the hospital continues its founding mission, blending cutting-edge medical science with deep compassion to provide outstanding care and improve the health and well-being of its community.
