We are a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity across all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia. Since 1927, we have been ensuring the reliable flow of electricity for more than 65 million people, operating the largest power grid in North America. Our team works around the clock to maintain grid reliability and administer competitive wholesale electricity markets, similar to how a stock market functions but for power.

Our mission is to provide reliable electricity at an affordable cost through competitive markets while planning the system for the future. We embrace innovation and collaborate with our members and key industry players to explore new technologies and grid-enhancing solutions. As a neutral, independent grid operator, we do not own power plants or generate electricity - instead, we act as the traffic controllers of the high-voltage electric system, balancing supply and demand in real-time to keep the lights on for millions of homes and businesses.
