About People In Need
We are People in Need (Člověk v tísni), a non-governmental, non-profit organization with a foundation rooted in the ideals of humanism, freedom, equality, and solidarity. We believe that people anywhere in the world should have the right to make decisions about their lives and to share the rights expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Our journey began in 1992, sparked by a group of war correspondents and student leaders who felt an undeniable urge to act in the face of unfolding conflicts and societal shifts. What started as a student initiative to deliver aid to Nagorno-Karabakh has grown into one of the largest non-profit organizations in Central Europe.
Our mission is multifaceted, yet singular in its core purpose: to effectively help people suffering from the consequences of war, natural disasters, authoritarian regimes, or poverty. We strive to alleviate suffering and promote human dignity. We provide humanitarian aid in crisis regions, support human rights defenders, promote democratic freedoms, and work on social inclusion and education programs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Over the years, we've delivered aid to over 50 countries, always adapting to the specific needs of the communities we serve. We are committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring that the support we receive translates into meaningful impact for those who need it most. Our work is driven by a deep sense of responsibility and a belief in the power of collective action to create positive change. We continue to evolve, learn, and expand our reach, always guided by the principle of putting people first.
