Are you looking for a role in a company that's solving one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime? Ophelia helps people end their opioid use and restore their quality of life with respect for their time and dignity. Our mission is to make evidence-based treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD) accessible to everyone... and we're looking to bring more people onto our team to help us achieve it.
Ophelia is a venture-backed, healthcare startup that helps individuals with OUD by providing FDA-approved medication and clinical care through a telehealth platform. Our approach is discreet, convenient, and affordable. We've been successfully operating in 14 states for almost four years and we're excited to continue our growth. We are a team of doctors, scientists, startup veterans, and White House advisors, backed by leading technology and healthcare investors working to re-imagine and re-build OUD treatment in America.
About the Role
As Director of Product Design, you will inspire our entire organization to create people-centered products that prove telehealth to be the best way to treat opioid use disorder! You will be responsible for defining and leading the implementation of Ophelia’s product design strategy. That includes managing our Product Design team, collaborating across engineering, product management, and data and working with business stakeholders to hear needs and prioritize work, ensuring a beautiful, usable, and thoughtfully prioritized feature set, a scalable development process, and ultimately a great set of digital products that will transform healthcare and save lives.
Product Design today is one full-time, Senior Product Designer plus great collaboration across software engineering. We use an agile approach rooted in the principles of the Agile Manifesto. We have a robust design system, including components built on top of the Mantine framework, which are well integrated and supported across our team and products. We have a custom built EMR platform for our clinical organization and a patient portal. We also consider the numerous other interaction modes (including text messaging, video conferencing, and third party software) in our complete product system.
Our product design tools today primarily include the Ophelia design system, Figma, Whimsical, and FullStory. In this role you will be both a leader and a hands-on contributor, in our growing organization. You will be a peer leader to the heads of Data, Product Management, and Software Engineering. Product Design is already ingrained in our corporate culture: you’ll witness our team already thinking with user experience in mind and leveraging the principles of our product design team. And we constantly seek improvement!
In this fully remote role, you will report to our Chief Technology Officer and be a peer to our Directors of Product Management, Engineering, and Data. You will work with the leadership of all teams at the company to push forward Ophelia’s product design experience to foster a culture of people-centric design to provide better patient care. You will be accountable for setting and ensuring both the expectations for product design quality and experience, along with related analytics data, and setting the long-term vision for our digital products. You will be responsible for reporting on the related metrics and working with all department leaders. Because the team is small today, you will likely need to be quite hands-on in the early days and evolve towards more focused management in the future.
Together, we’ll help hard-to-reach people treat their opioid dependence. You may not have experience in this treatment area, but ideally you’ll have knowledge of the healthcare space, including understanding health outcomes and benchmarks, systems, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA).

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain a product design strategy that is industry-leading, delightful, and compliant. Oversee the end-to-end design process, from user research and concept development to final visual design, usability testing, shipping and measuring impact.
  • Mentor and grow the design team, fostering a culture of creativity, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Work across the business to solicit great product design projects, prioritize the work, and communicate around the work. Ensure timely and reliable delivery of those projects. Broadly share data insights related to the behaviors and usage patterns.
  • Empower design decision-making across the organization by teaching design, how to use components, leveraging patterns and copy, and then, trusting others to execute.
  • Advocate for people-centered design principles and ensure they are integrated into the product development lifecycle.
  • Participate in Tech Leadership planning and other activities.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive innovation and excellence in product design.

  • Stellar communications with a passion for aligning your team and able to create strong points of view to help our strategy, backed with data
  • Deep understanding of people-centered design principles and recognized methodologies
  • Strong proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools
  • Experience in true agile practice including hypothesis development and experiment design, with iterative design mindset
  • Passionate about our mission to make evidence-based addiction treatment universally accessible. Any experience in healthcare or telehealth is a nice plus!

Online opioid addiction treatment that (actually) works. Get the gold standard of treatment at home with medication and support that fits privately into your life.

Treatment isn’t one size fits all

Our mission is to provide the best opioid addiction treatment without the baggage of rehab. We're driven by science and committed to privacy. Above all, we believe in recommendations, not orders.

What we believe

There’s a proven treatment for opioid addiction, and it’s easier than most people think: Medication-assisted treatment reduces overdoses by 75%, and it’s covered by insurance. It’s just too hard to get. Ophelia is here to change that.

Recovery on your own terms: Rehab requires putting your life on hold, leaving your environment, and living somewhere else for months. Ophelia offers a different kind of solution.

Patients are the experts on themselves: We won’t force you to do anything you don’t want. Quite the opposite. You’re the expert of your own life. We advocate harm reduction because everyone deserves the right to feel safe.
