About the Role:

Job Summary

This is a Coding Resident position for new coders in which the employee, under general supervision, abstracts and assigns ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification) and PCS (Procedure Coding System) codes or CPT (Current Procedure Terminology) codes as appropriate to inpatient and/or outpatient accounts.

  • Minimum Experience: Zero (0) to one (1) year of ICD-10 and/or CPT-4 hospital coding experience required or other healthcare experience in nursing, registered health information administrator or technician, etc.

  • Preferred Licensure or other certifications: Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Coding Specialists (CCS) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) .

Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency of 85% or greater on coding audit reviews, must be maintained for two consecutive quarters for inpatient and/or outpatient coding of all service types. Failure to maintain could result in corrective action as outlined in the coding policy/standard of work.

  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology

  • Ability to work independently as a remote employee while remaining actively engaged and supportive of the coding team as a whole

  • Ability to use electronic medical records and encoder systems

  • Accurate and precise attention to detail

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Basic knowledge of billing requirements and the ability to resolve edits at the time of coding

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • As an entry-level Coder Resident in training, receive hands-on training and feedback on assigning codes to patient accounts.

  • Gain experience through training to become an independent medical coder. Training times may vary but are expected to last 3-6 months before being full independent.

  • Reviews work queue assignments and prioritizes by date, charges and payors to meet revenue cycle goals.

  • Assigns and sequences diagnosis and procedure codes using appropriate classification systems and official coding guidelines. Appends modifiers as necessary.

  • Follows coding guidelines and billing requirements to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.

  • Verify charge entries are accurate based on the documentation provided.

  • Reassign accounts with missing or incomplete documentation/charges to appropriate work queues.

  • As a remote employee must be able to organize work to ensure goals are met. Identifies and escalates any obstacles to fulfilling job responsibilities.

  • Resolve billing edits (LCD, NCD, MUE, etc.) at time of coding.

  • Correctly abstracts discharge disposition, performing physician, and procedure dates.

  • Attends and actively participates in huddles/meetings/committees as required and appropriate.
