Full Stack Lead Software Engineer (UI-Focused, React & Java)

Your opportunity

The Telemetry Platform group at New Relic builds the platform and foundational services for secure, automated, reliable, and dynamic ingestion and processing of streaming telemetry data. As a Lead Software Engineer in our ingestion pipeline, you'll join a team of engineers that are in charge of a critical part of our Full Stack Observability product.

We are looking for a talented Full Stack Lead Software Engineer with a passion for crafting exceptional user interfaces using React and a solid foundation in Java backend development. This role places a strong emphasis on designing intuitive, responsive UIs while contributing to the full stack, from frontend to backend. Beyond coding, you will collaborate with stakeholders to gather user requirements, write clear business use cases, and ensure our solutions align with business goals and user needs.

What you'll do

• Lead another engineer, as well as hands-on coding
• Design, document and develop high-quality, responsive, and user-friendly front-end interfaces using React, focusing on usability, performance, and modern UI/UX principles.
• Build and maintain robust backend services and APIs using Java to support front-end functionality and business logic.
• Gather and analyze user requirements through collaboration with product managers, business analysts, and end-users.
• Write detailed business use cases and technical documentation to bridge the gap between user needs and development efforts.
• Ensure seamless integration between front-end and back-end components, optimizing for scalability and reliability.
• Participate in the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, coding, testing, and deployment.
• Conduct user testing and iterate on UI designs based on feedback to enhance the user experience.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across the stack, with a focus on delivering a polished front-end product.
• Contribute to code reviews, maintain coding standards, and mentor junior team members as needed.
• Stay updated on UI trends, React ecosystem advancements, and Java best practices to recommend improvements.
• Support our full stack on an on-call rotation.

This role requires

• 7+ years of full stack development experience, with primary focus on UI development using React.
• Strong proficiency in React, including hooks, state management (e.g., Redux, Context API), and component-based architecture.
• Solid experience with Java API for backend development (e.g., Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, microservices).
• Proven ability to write clear, concise business use cases and translate user requirements into technical specifications.
• Familiarity with front-end tools and libraries (e.g., CSS, Sass, TypeScript, Material-UI) to enhance UI development.
• Experience with database systems (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and integrating them into full stack applications.
• Strong analytical skills and a user-centric mindset to understand and prioritize user needs.
• Excellent communication skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders in slack, zoom and through documentation tools such as confluent and google docs/presentations.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Bonus points if you have

• Experience with UI/UX design principles or tools (e.g., Figma, Pixso) to collaborate with stakeholders.

• Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) for deploying full stack applications.
• Familiarity with agile methodologies and tools like Jira or Confluence for documenting use cases.
• Exposure to testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, JUnit) for ensuring quality across the stack.
