A Brief Overview
Discusses and resolves financial matters with patients/guarantors who are uninsured, underinsured, and/or owe outstanding amounts to SPG. Makes payment arrangements, administers the SPG Charity Care Program, and collects monies due from patients/guarantors. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
- Discusses and resolves financial matters with patients and guarantors who are uninsured, underinsured, and/or owe outstanding amounts to SPG. Assists patients with payment arrangements and documents such arrangements.
- Makes payment arrangements and administers the SPG Charity Care Program, using special expertise in insurance eligibility and coverage verification. Conducts insurance eligibility and coverage verification and documents results of inquiry before patient/guarantor arrives at practice for scheduled services.
- Assists self-pay patients with limited financial resources to apply for consideration/qualification under the charity care program.
- Documents charity care applications and outcomes of all financial counseling endeavors.
- Prepares financial reports to support efforts of SPG to demonstrate charity care provided to support the not-for-profit status of SPG.
- Supports Manager in other various collection functions. Sets collection goals and establishes performance improvement plans to achieve those goals in collaboration with the applicable practice/office manager and CBO Manager.
- Provides training as needed to assist staff to understand practice-based financial counseling and self-pay collection challenges and issues.
- Collects monies due from patients/guarantors and prepares receipt.
- Performs other job functions as requested or needed.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
Work Experience Requirements
- 3-5 years Billing, coding, or insurance verification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication and diplomacy skills.
- Knowledge of practice management systems and basic computer skills.
- Detail oriented, analytical thinking, excellent prioritization, and organizational skills.
Supervision Provided by this Position
- There are no lead or supervisory responsibilities assigned to this position.
Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
