What can you expect?
Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. is a global professional services firm, headquartered in New York City with businesses in insurance brokerage, risk management, reinsurance services, talent management, investment advisory, and management consulting. It comprises the operating companies Marsh, Mercer, Guy Carpenter, JLT and Oliver Wyman.
Marsh Tech is the IT organization that delivers solutions for the Marsh business, as part of the broader MMC Tech team. Marsh Tech is seeking to appoint a number of Solution Architects, as part of the refreshed Solution Architecture practice within Marsh Tech Architecture & Engineering.
The Marsh Tech Architecture & Engineering team are on a mission to transform the way in which we design and deliver technology products and solutions to our business customers, in order to support our ambitious growth targets. To this end, we are re-creating and re-energizing our Solution Architecture team to drive new approaches to how we architect, design and implement our technology solutions.
The role of the Solution Architect is to collaborate with other engineering team members to define and implement consistent and best practice application designs that implement the business requirements, and adhere to our technology strategy. Solution Architects will be embedded in and key members of our delivery Pods & Squads. Their role is to ensure that the work of the Pod and Squads that they are embedded in, follows our design patterns, adheres to best practice, and is robust, resilient, maintainable and extendable.
These roles are based in our Global Insourcing Centre (GIC) in India (Mumbai and Pune). This is our global hub location for technology and engineering roles. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to help us shape and deliver the technology direction for Marsh.
We will count on you to:
Work with our business and Ops partners to understand business and technology problems or opportunities
Collaborate with your colleagues in delivery teams to define and implement a set of standard designs and technology approaches that support our strategic goals including delivering with speed and agility; and reducing the unit cost of technology
Incorporate reuse, standardisation and security-by-design into your solution designs to simplify, secure and accelerate technology delivery
Be innovative in your thinking and use your expertise to influence the MMC technology roadmap
Take your architectural designs through our on boarding processes to ensure they meet MMC’s standards and conventions
Lead and participate in architecture reviews as part of MMC’s Architecture Assurance process
Act as part of geographically distributed team of highly capable Solution Architects, who will be embedded with our delivery teams (in a scaled Agile Pods & Squads model), and who can drive the adoption and implementation of our standard design patterns through hands-on technical leadership, guidance and empowerment for engineering teams
Participate in the Solution Architecture team to achieve our goals around delivery with agility, reduced unit cost through re-use, etc
Be an involved member in our technology community, championing the latest technologies and trends within MMC and the wider industry, sharing your knowledge, successes and learnings with your colleagues
Bring a shift left mentality, ensuring that automation and efficiencies are enabled through the solution design
Provide thought leadership around how technology can be deployed in new and innovative ways to provide a source of competitive advantage to Marsh
Be a hands on leader – manage coach, develop and support team members in problem solving and solution delivery. Lead by example, including getting into the code on a regular basis and demonstrate best practice coding. Make no mistake, this role will require you to be ‘on the tools’. It is not a ‘desk-based’ architecture role
Work with other technology groups and stakeholders across MMC Tech to ensure alignment with company wide tooling, standards and processes
What you need to have:
A broad and deep range of experience in the tech industry as a hands-on practitioner; across technologies and business problems.
Experience of modern application architectures, and in environments and cultures focused on achieving reduced unit cost and a high degree of re-use
Excellent knowledge across a range of modern technology tools, languages and processes. A sample of the core technologies we use at Marsh includes
Node.js
REST API
Apigee Hybrid
Kubernetes
Angular / React
Mongo DB
Kafka
Camunda
Open AI API
But your attitude and general experience are more important to us than knowledge of specific technologies
Experience of software development methods including Agile, Scrum, Kanban, CI/CD
Comfortable working in a matrix organisation, with distributed teams from different cultures
What makes you stand out:
Your proven track record in playing a leading role in teams that deliver world class technology platforms
Your technical expertise with a range of technologies and business problems. You have been around the block a few times, and there’s not much you haven’t come across before in one shape or form.
Your experience with large scale, complex, business critical globally deployed solutions. You bring real world experience of e.g. site reliability engineering (SRE) practices, etc
You can rapidly relate business (insurance) concepts, to technical and system design concepts that can support and deliver improved business outcomes
You’re a natural leader – someone that other colleagues want to work with
Your strong influencing skills and the ability to educate, coach and guide teams and colleagues
You can simplify complexity. You can rapidly grasp complex technical and business problems; identify and design elegant and simple solutions; and communicate the problem and the solution succinctly and clearly to a range of audiences
Great communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable working in a distributed environment, with an ability to form great working relationships across teams, locations, and timezones.
