This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Lead Backend Developer (Lead Engineer) in Europe.
As a Lead Backend Developer, you will take ownership of the architecture, design, and execution of a high-scale retail platform. You will lead a team of backend developers and AI specialists, defining technical standards, building robust microservices, and managing AWS infrastructure to support millions of daily transactions. This role offers a hands-on leadership opportunity where you can influence system design, security, observability, and API governance while collaborating with product and mobile teams. The position starts as a 4-month engagement with strong potential to transition to a full-time leadership role. You will work in a fully remote, globally distributed environment, applying your expertise to create a scalable, resilient backend ecosystem. Your work will directly impact the success of retail operations across diverse markets.
Accountabilities
- Lead the design and maintenance of the backend architecture, applying Domain-Driven Design principles for scalable microservices.
- Set up and manage AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK), including EKS with Fargate, RDS, S3, Cognito, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Develop high-quality, production-ready code in Java and Spring Boot for core backend components.
- Oversee a team of backend developers, conducting code reviews, guiding best practices, and ensuring team alignment.
- Define database schemas, implement migration strategies, and optimize PostgreSQL performance.
- Establish API standards, documentation, and versioning to maintain a consistent and reliable platform.
- Ensure backend security, including data protection, secret management, and VPC network security.
- Implement observability and monitoring strategies using AWS CloudWatch and X-Ray.
- Collaborate closely with product and mobile teams to deliver integrated solutions across the platform.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend development experience, with extensive knowledge of Java and Spring Boot.
- Proven experience building and deploying complex microservices architectures.
- Deep understanding of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles.
- Hands-on experience with AWS services: EKS, Fargate, RDS, S3, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, and Cognito.
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience integrating third-party APIs; WhatsApp Business API experience is a strong plus.
- Strong database design and performance optimization skills, including PostgreSQL and Redis caching.
- Demonstrated ability to lead small development teams, conduct code reviews, and enforce technical standards.
- Excellent communication skills in English; Spanish is a strong advantage due to project focus.
- Experience in highly scalable, high-availability, and secure backend systems.
