This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for an Application Modernization Engineer in the United States.
This role offers the opportunity to lead critical application modernization initiatives, driving the migration of enterprise systems to more scalable, efficient, and maintainable platforms. You will manage end-to-end modernization projects, including transitioning applications from legacy AIX environments to Linux and migrating middleware from WebSphere Application Server to JBoss Web Server. The position requires close collaboration with infrastructure, DevOps, and security teams to ensure high performance, compliance, and operational reliability. This role is ideal for a proactive engineer with strong technical expertise, excellent problem-solving skills, and a passion for optimizing enterprise applications.
Accountabilities
- Lead the full migration of applications from AIX to Linux environments, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
- Plan and execute the transition of middleware from WebSphere Application Server to JBoss Web Server.
- Conduct application dependency analysis, refactor configuration files, startup scripts, and deployment artifacts.
- Perform performance tuning, load testing, and regression testing post-migration.
- Configure SSL/TLS, audit logging, and permissions management across environments.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, DevOps, and security teams to maintain compliance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Develop detailed migration documentation, runbooks, and post-mortem reports.
- Identify opportunities for automation using tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, or Terraform.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in AIX/Linux system administration and middleware management.
- Proven success in AIX-to-Linux and WebSphere-to-JBoss migration projects.
- Strong knowledge of Java/J2EE applications and enterprise system integration.
- Experience with shell scripting, configuration file translation, and filesystem management.
- Familiarity with performance monitoring tools (Splunk, Dynatrace, AppDynamics).
- Understanding of security best practices, including SSL/TLS and audit/logging configurations.
- Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
- Preferred: Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), containerization (Docker, OpenShift), DevOps pipelines, infrastructure automation (Ansible, Terraform), and virtualization (VMware).
