USA TODAY is seeking an experienced reporter to join our Health & Wellness section. Our section explores topics that include everything from mental health stigma to the latest health trending news and how culture impacts our wellbeing – plus the truth about the latest craze on TikTok. Whenever possible, we tell these stories with inspiring, people-focused framing that appeals to a young and diverse readership. We're looking for someone who can come up with thoughtful feature pitches but can also react quickly to the news with day-turn stories as needed. Experience covering health news as it pertains to politics is a plus. Our team is obsessed with headlines so we’re looking for someone who shares that passion. Experience with tracking metrics and headline testing is important for this role. Successful candidates are outstanding writers who are skilled at drawing out meaningful quotes from a diverse array of sources. We’re looking for someone with ideas who is ready to pitch engaging, eye-catching pieces. You’ll need to possess strong SEO skills, impeccable news judgment and a familiarity with metrics. We’re on the lookout for someone who can sense what the next big story will be. A passion for and expertise in Health and Wellness content is essential. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.
Responsibilities:
- Pitch and write quick-turn stories that pertain to the topics of health, wellness, lifestyle and culture.
- Conceptualize and report several big enterprise projects per year.
- Collaborate with teammates (remotely) to further develop story ideas and brainstorm.
- Optimize content for SEO, homepage promotion and social media.
- Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity and credibility.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Editing experience is a plus.
- Knowledgeable about the standards and ethics around newsgathering.
- Expert at source interviews, the use of public records, data analysis and primary and secondary source research.
- Experienced in enterprise work with self-directed story idea generation and execution.
- Easily writes quick-turn stories and longer enterprise pieces with minimal guidance.
- Capable of leading special projects and mentoring less-experienced colleagues.
- Demonstrated expertise with social media (TikTok, Reddit, etc.) and must be comfortable using these platforms to find sources and promote content.
- A thorough understanding of metrics and how to use these to inform coverage decisions.
- Must enjoy collaborating and working with teammates remotely.

The hourly rate for this role will range between $25.48 and $39.81. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
