Nonprofit Operations Manager & 501(c)(4) Specialist
The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to steering transformative technologies towards benefiting humanity and reducing large-scale risks.
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit the Future of Life Foundation (FLF) and the new 501(c)(4) Future of Life Action and Research, Inc. (FLARE) are looking for a detail-oriented person to help us in two important areas:
Part 1: Establishing and Managing Operations at FLARE, a New 501(c)(4) Organization (50% of time) You'll work directly with our 501c4 Director to set up and manage operations for this new advocacy organization, including:
* Continuing set-up of the legal structure with appropriate counsel* Establishing financial systems (bank accounts, accounting practices) with external providers* Onboarding to and ensuring compliance with all regulations governing 501(c)(4) organizations* Making informed judgments about when activities should be conducted through the 501(c)(4) vs. 501(c)(3) organizations* Managing day-to-day operations and administrative tasks
Part 2: Operational Support for Future of Life Foundation (501(c)(3)) (50% of time)You'll report to FLF’s COO and help ensure operational execution by:* Being the primary person powering FLF’s operational requirements (allowing FLF’s COO to shift focus more toward team & project management + strategy)* Ensuring ongoing compliance requirements are met at a high level* Receiving requests for operational improvements and making them happen* Example projects that you’d take on if you were to have joined May 1, 2025:--- Reorganizing and optimizing our Notion workspace--- Implementing workflow automation & integration of AI tools--- Organizing and documenting strategic planning materials--- Supporting our Entrepreneur in Residence program, including immigration logistics--- Translating retreat outcomes and planning documents into actionable systems--- Resolving pending operational issues in our Mattermost channels--- Processing incoming invoices
What You'll Need* Strong attention to detail and organizational skills* Ability to learn and understand regulatory requirements* Good judgment about appropriate activities for different tax-exempt structures* Comfort with digital tools (in this role you’ll use Notion, n8n, and Mattermost & others)* Self-directed work style with the ability to identify and solve problems with which you may not have experience* Excellent communication skills* 3+ years experience and an undergraduate degree

Logistics If you are in the US, you will be an employee of the Future of Life Institute (FLI) which is a 501(c)(3) research non-profit. FLI, FLF, and FLARE are affiliated organizations. We have resource-sharing agreements in place that enable us to share staff across the organizations. If you are not in the US, you will be employed by our Employer of Record (EOR) provider, Deel.
* Compensation: $100,000-162,000+ (plus full benefits)* Location: We prefer people with 4+ overlapping work hours with US Central Time.* Evaluation Process (subject to change):--- 4-hour paid work test--- Interview--- Interview work test (1 hour)--- Interview(s) with leadership of the organizations
