Salary: Up to £85,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Location: fully remote, anywhere in the UK

Hours: 35 hours per week, including a 2pm finish on a Friday!

Role Purpose

Search and the associated search engine-driven navigation features are central to our customer experience. We are looking for a talented Senior Java Software Engineer with extensive Search experience to join us in this remarkable journey.

To support our global marketplace, we rely heavily on massive Apache Solr search engine clusters that host collections of hundreds of millions of documents and serve thousands of queries per second. Our production search clusters run on >1000 CPU cores, 36TB of RAM, and 200TB of ultra-fast SSD storage.

We’ve built Fruugo’s platform and infrastructure primarily using Java, Spring, and related technologies. We work in a fast-paced agile environment and deploy new functionality at least weekly.

In this role, you have the opportunity to shape our search capabilities and enhance our platform to support both our customers’ and merchants’ needs, as well as face the ever-changing challenges of a global marketplace. You will be involved in the design, development and support of highly scalable, highly performant and highly available search capabilities.

This role will report to the Head of Architecture as part of the Platform Team.

Requirements

What we are looking for:

• A Java Software Engineer and Search expert with proven delivery experience at scale.
• In-depth knowledge of Solr, Lucene or similar.
• Experience working with high traffic volumes and large datasets.
• Knowledge and experience of vector search technologies.
• Experience with mentoring and coaching and sharing technical expertise.
• Excellent communication skills to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Work with Software Architects, Software Engineers, and Product Owners to propose, design, implement, and review search-focused solutions.
• Work with other team members to implement solutions based on user stories.
• Build fault tolerant, self-healing, globally distributed applications, and services
• Champion best practices and software engineering excellence.
• Support colleagues with both project and day to day search-related issues.
