Salary: 150k-170k USD

Federato is on a mission to defend the right to efficient, equitable insurance for all. We enable insurers to provide affordable coverage to people and organizations facing the issues of today - the climate crisis, cyber-attacks, social inflation, etc. Our vision is understood and well funded by those behind Salesforce, Veeva, Zoom, Box, etc.

Federato’s AI/ML-driven platform leverages deep reinforcement learning to help insurance companies optimize the portfolio of risks they insure, allowing them to continue to provide fair and equitable pricing in difficult-to-price areas. Our category-defining ‘RiskOps’ solution drives better underwriting decisions by operationalizing underutilized data investments and surfacing real-time risk and portfolio insights. We focus on putting insurance underwriters back in the driver’s seat, helping them meet their goals while providing an important service to society.

Role Overview
You’ll join a small, high-impact data engineering team that sits within Federato’s broader AI/ML organization. We work closely with machine learning engineers to support AI product development, while also partnering cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Customer Success, and GTM teams to build trusted data models and surface insights that improve both internal decision-making and the end-user experience. You’ll play a key role in shaping the foundation of our analytics stack and helping Federato scale with confidence.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Design, build, and maintain the foundational data models (dbt) that power analytics across the organization.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define key business metrics, implement tracking, and deliver actionable insights to teams.
  • Partner with platform engineers to optimize data pipelines that serve both internal decision-making and AI-assisted user interfaces.
  • Enable self-service analytics by delivering clean, well-documented models and intuitive data tools.
  • Shape how data is presented in our platform—contributing to features that enable users to interact with and explore their own data more intuitively.
  • Own the data lifecycle—from ingestion and transformation to validation and documentation—ensuring trusted, production-grade outputs.=

Who We Hope You Are:

  • 4+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or a related role in a modern data stack (e.g., dbt, Snowflake, Airflow, Looker, or similar).
  • Strong SQL and Python skills and a passion for clean, modular, testable data models.
  • Experience with software development practices like version control, CI/CD, or dbt testing strategies.
  • Experience building and maintaining a semantic layer in collaboration with data consumers.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and working closely with business stakeholders to understand their data needs.
  • Proven track record of designing high-impact data products and pipelines in fast-paced environments.

Bonus Points for:

  • Prior experience working in or adjacent to insurance, fintech, or risk modeling domains.
  • Experience supporting AI/ML-powered products or working with data workflows that power intelligent applications.
  • Familiarity with data observability tooling (e.g., Monte Carlo, Datafold).
  • Comfort working in Typescript
  • Contributions to open-source data tools or involvement in the data community.

Federato's journey began in 2020, born from a vision to revolutionize the insurance industry. Founded by Will Ross and William Steenbergen, the company recognized the challenges faced by underwriters in an increasingly complex and volatile risk landscape. Traditional methods were struggling to keep pace with emerging threats like the climate crisis, cyber-attacks, and social inflation, often leaving underserved communities and organizations without access to efficient and equitable insurance coverage. The founders saw an opportunity to leverage cutting-edge technology to empower insurers and, in turn, protect more people and businesses.

What started as an idea to apply AI and machine learning to underwriting quickly evolved into the development of a category-defining 'RiskOps' platform. This platform was meticulously designed by underwriters, for underwriters, with a core philosophy of putting them back in control. Federato's approach was not just about automation, but about augmenting human expertise with powerful data-driven insights. The team dedicated significant time, including over 1250 hours in direct consultation with underwriters, to understand their pain points and build a solution that truly addressed their needs. This collaborative spirit and focus on real-world applicability became a cornerstone of Federato's development. The company's mission crystallized: to defend the right to efficient, equitable insurance for all by enabling insurers to provide affordable coverage through smarter risk selection and portfolio optimization. This commitment has attracted significant backing from prominent venture capital firms who share Federato's vision for a more resilient and inclusive insurance future.
