Employee count: 51-200

Salary: 100k-100k USD

United States only

Founded in 2018, ev.energy set out with a clear mission: to make electric vehicle charging simpler, greener, and more affordable for everyone.

By downloading our app, drivers can easily charge their vehicles overnight while we work quietly in the background. Our smart-charging algorithm leverages real-time data to align charging sessions with energy from renewable sources. The grid is under increasing strain from EV charging at peak times - we're already working with over 40 utilities across North America and Europe to help them reduce this demand.

Our team, now over 100 strong, brings together expertise from National Grid, Tesla, Google, and Amazon among others. Backed by over $50 million in funding from top VCs including National Grid Partners, WEX Venture Capital, Energy Impact Partners, and JLR’s InMotion Ventures, we’re on a mission to drive meaningful change.

Join us in shaping a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable future.

The role

We’re working with over 30 utilities across the US and Canada, optimizing EV charging to balance grid loads. You’ll lead the design process for your squad from concept to launch, rolling out configurable smart charging programs globally. You'll enhance the end-to-end experience for utilities and end users across mobile and web, creating delightful interactions. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams across product and engineering, primarily based on the East Coast of the US and Canada.

You’ll be part of a team of 5 designers, reporting to the design manager. The team is collaborative, supportive, and fun, all working remotely.

This is a fixed term role to cover maternity leave within the team until December 2025, paying (pro rata), up to 100k USD or 138k CAD.

What will you be doing?

  • Leading the design process independently from discovery to launch, delivering smart charging solutions

  • Enhancing the user experience of utility programs across mobile and web, improving satisfaction and engagement

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams such as product, engineering, program management, and customer support, on design strategies aligned with company goals

  • Contributing to the design team by sharing knowledge and mentoring peers while learning from others

What are we looking for?

  • 3+ years of product design experience

  • A portfolio showcasing impactful product design work, including your end-to-end product design process

  • Proactive, clear communication skills (written and verbal) with experience collaborating in remote teams

  • Confidence aligning design decisions with business strategy to drive growth

  • Confidence conducting user research and making data-informed decisions

  • Passion and curiosity for our users, product, and industry

  • Based in EST

  • Bonus: A strong knowledge of Tokens Studio and design systems

What are we excited to find?

  • Experience building 0-1 products and comfort shaping solutions with ambiguity

  • Experience with tools like Mixpanel or Holistics

  • Experience in B2B2C ecosystems, able to navigate complex technical and user experience dependencies

How will we support you?

  • Work remotely and work well - we'll provide the tools you need to do your best (including a Macbook Pro), as well as access to co-working spaces

  • Access to conferences, meet-ups and training through our L&D allowance

  • A structured career progression framework and advancement opportunities

  • Depending on location - health insurance, 401(k) or pension, paid parental leave, life insurance

  • 25 days holiday plus public holidays

  • Annual team gatherings - in previous years the whole company has spent a week together in the UK

  • 100% charity matching to help spread good!

Founded in 2018 by Nick Woolley and Chris Darby, ev.energy embarked on a mission to simplify the electric vehicle charging experience, making it greener and more cost-effective for everyone. What began as a bootstrapped venture quickly evolved, fueled by a shared passion for harmonizing EV charging with the energy grid. The company recognized the inherent challenges EV owners faced and set out to develop a smart, cloud-based platform to automatically optimize charging. This innovative approach aimed to align charging sessions with periods of high renewable energy generation and low grid demand, thereby reducing both carbon emissions and energy costs for drivers.

The journey saw ev.energy transition from a friends-and-family backed initiative to an institutionally supported start-up, and eventually, into an organized scale-up. Along this path, the company has consistently focused on its core values of sustainability and user-centric design. Their platform ingests real-time data from various sources, employing a proprietary smart-charging algorithm to intelligently manage EV charging. This not only benefits individual drivers but also supports the stability of the broader energy grid, a critical factor as EV adoption continues to surge. ev.energy's commitment to its mission has been recognized through numerous accolades, including being named 'World's Best Energy Start-Up' in the Free Electrons programme. As a certified B Corporation, the company meets high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, underscoring their dedication to creating a positive impact on the planet and society. With a growing team spread across Europe and North America, ev.energy continues to expand its partnerships with utilities, automotive manufacturers, and charger providers, driving towards a future where EV charging is seamlessly integrated into a cleaner energy ecosystem.
