Job Description

Radioactive Materials Transport Package Engineer

Last year, EDF Energy moved over 1,600 packages containing radioactive material to support generation and defuelling at its eight nuclear sites. EDF Energy’s Radioactive Materials Package Design Authority plays a crucial role in ensuring that the company has transport solutions to move radioactive material, safely and compliantly, within the UK and overseas.

We are looking for an engineer to join this team and contribute to the engineering behind the successful delivery of radioactive material transport.

The Opportunity

The Radioactive Materials Transport Package Engineer will work within the multidisciplinary Spent Fuel Services Team that delivers EDF Energy’s Dual Mission: the safe defuelling of our AGR nuclear reactors and supporting continued operations of our AGR & PWR nuclear power stations.

The Spent Fuel Services Team is responsible for providing EDF’s nuclear sites and stakeholder sites engineered solutions to enable the safe and compliant transport of radioactive material. Your role will be to manage the design, operation, maintenance, modification and technical requirements of a broad suite of radioactive material package designs including the A2 Spent Fuel Flask. You will work with internal and external stakeholders at our fleet of nuclear power stations, our suppliers and regulators to provide effective through life management of these packages. In addition, you will provide oversight of fleet processes governing the use of these transport packages. This role has a direct bearing on safety and company performance.

This post offers the rare opportunity to visit the full range EDF’s nuclear sites, as well as those of the wider Nuclear Industry and our supply partners. Field work includes providing technical advice, supervising major works, participating in event recovery, and auditing and benchmarking. This may occasionally include international travel, where necessary.

Pay, benefits and culture

We can offer a competitive salary from £61,730 - £81,263 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement, as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing

You will ensure that EDF Energy maintain a safe, compliant and efficient capability to transport radioactive materials within the UK and abroad.

As a Radioactive Materials Transport Package Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring that radioactive material transport packages have been suitably designed and certified for use in accordance with the relevant national and international regulations;

  • Working with our supply chain partners on the design, manufacture, commissioning, licensing and maintenance of transport packages;

  • Providing on-site technical support at our stations and suppliers to deliver the transport plan;

  • The production and review of technical documents, including finite-element analysis, shielding calculations, and load restraint plans;

  • Providing written guidance on the operation, maintenance and modification of transport packages, and act as a principal point of contact for end users;

  • Providing technical support to projects involving the manufacture, commissioning, testing and maintenance of transport packages;

  • Providing technical support/advice to end users on how radioactive material can be transported based on the package solutions available to the EDF fleet;

  • Ensuring adequate quality arrangements are in place at our stations and suppliers to ensure compliant package operation and maintenance;

  • The management of through-life records for transport packages in service;

  • Mentoring station and supplier staff on radioactive material transport regulations.

Who you are

You will hold a minimum of a HNC qualification in a Mathematics, Science or Engineering subject. A degree level qualification would be advantageous.

You must have experience of working in a highly regulated industry, and an awareness of the nuclear sector.

Skills and experience we’re looking for you to bring into this role include:

  • A high degree of technical and analytical expertise;

  • A quick learning, problem solving mindset with a bias for action;

  • Stakeholder management experience across multiple operational sites and suppliers, with the ability to influence and to create positive working relationships;

  • The ability to react quickly to complex operational issues and give clear and timely advice to site staff;

  • A clear, concise written and oral communication style;

  • The ability to plan long term solutions and improvements whilst prioritising ongoing operations;

  • Experience in managing suppliers and commercial contracts;

  • Working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.

Knowledge and experience of EDF Energy AGR/PWR operations is desirable, as is familiarity with The Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations and the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. Previous experience in radioactive material transport in a technical, scientific or commercial role would be advantageous.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
