The Opportunity

As our next Environmental Engineer, we’re looking for you to join our dynamic Environmental Technical Team, where you’ll play a key role in shaping the environmental success of the Hinkley Point C project. This is a varied and impactful position, offering the chance to provide expert input across environmental engineering, permitting, regulatory engagement, and technical support.

In this role, you’ll work closely with teams across HPC, offering specialist advice to ensure environmental design assurance and compliance activities are delivered to the highest standard on time and with confidence. As the project evolves, you’ll also support construction, commissioning, and operational phases, making your contribution felt throughout the entire lifecycle of one of the UK’s most significant low-carbon energy projects.

What you’ll be doing

As an Environmental Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring environmental excellence on one of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for providing technical leadership and environmental oversight across a range of design changes, collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to maintain the highest environmental standards.

  • Support Environmental Technical Managers and Technical Leads on various engineering and environmental topics, while leading specific tasks and initiatives.
  • Review permanent plant engineering changes from design to as built, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT).
  • Oversee key aspects of the environmental design assurance process related to engineering modifications.
  • Manage the relationship and contract between the S&SA Environment Team and the Responsible Designer, aligning technical and environmental priorities.
  • Promote environmental engineering practices within new nuclear builds, offering expert advice and fostering knowledge across HPC and the wider directorate.
  • Coordinate efforts across the Environment team, S&SA, HPC project, EDF Group, and Commissioning teams to integrate environmental protection at every project stage.
  • Review and assess design changes from an environmental perspective, ensuring adherence to regulations and assurance standards.
  • Conduct technical assessments and manage quality reviews, ensuring all activities meet required standards.
  • Collaborate with EPRe and colleagues in France, maintaining strong communication and alignment.
  • Engage with regulators and environmental agencies, attending meetings and supporting discussions to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Monitor KPIs and SLAs to track performance and ensure metrics are met.

Who you are

To be successful in this role, we’re looking for you to bring a combination of relevant qualifications, experience, and professional attributes. This position requires someone with a solid technical foundation and a strong understanding of environmental engineering principles, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and influence key stakeholders. The following minimum qualifications and experience are essential:

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in an engineering or science-related discipline.
  • Proven experience in a technical, environmental role, focusing on environmental engineering and design assurance processes.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental issues, including legislation, policy, regulatory guidance, and standards.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Professional qualities such as accuracy, tenacity, a results-oriented approach, diplomacy, resilience, and teamwork.
  • Outstanding organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Desirable:
  • Membership (or progress toward membership) of a relevant professional institution.
  • Chartered Environmentalist and/or Chartered Engineer (or equivalent) or actively working toward chartered status.
  • A proven track record in the nuclear or other hazardous industries, demonstrating familiarity with complex regulatory environments.
