Summary:

The Sr. Program Officer is responsible for leading the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation’s mission and developing its grant portfolios to promote health equity and improve health outcomes of underserved populations affected by serious disease. This role will also engage with BMS teams to position BMS as a leader in corporate philanthropy in its commitment to improve diversity, inclusion, and health equity.

Grant-making Program Areas of Responsibility: Global Cancer Disparities Initiative in the United States, Global Cancer Disparities Initiative in China or India, and the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Award Program

Strategic Grant-making (Operational and Management) Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and optimize philanthropic grantmaking for the Global Cancer Disparities Initiative in the United States and the Global Cancer Disparities Initiative in China or India. Oversee the management and implementation of BMS Foundation signature programs including the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Award Program to advance the Foundation’s mission and philanthropic goals

  • Manage a diverse and inclusive global portfolio of grants to effectively strengthen health systems in a coordinated effort using strong portfolio and nonprofit management skills, partnership engagement, and comprehensive program monitoring and evaluation to ensure optimal operation and maximize the impact of Foundation programs

  • Identify unmet needs and drive high-impact initiatives that lead to systems-level change and build sustainable healthcare capacity within the specified focus areas at the global, regional, and national levels

  • Lead the planning and execution of key Foundation events including the Annual Grantee Summit in alternating years and bi-annual Expert Advisory Council meetings

  • Manage and mentor a grantmaking team that will assist the strategic grantmaking and operational support for the specified program areas. Team members will include Program Manager, PharmD/Public Health Resident, Tour of Duty participant, Early Law Career Associate, and Administrative Assistant

Stakeholder Management Responsibilities:

  • Establish and enhance engagement while communicating value to internal stakeholders across the organization, including with key members of BMS Oncology leadership, R&D, Corporate Social Responsibility/Purpose, Global Policy, BI&A, GDO, PBRG, Legal and Corporate Communications teams as well as with employees generally.

  • Serve as lead for Foundation contributions to Corporate Social Responsibility, Access to Medicines, Health Equity Commitments, ESG reporting, and company annual reports

  • Build and maintain effective external relationships and partnerships with key nonprofits, government agencies, fellow funders, policymakers, industry and philanthropic associations, and leaders from academia focused on health equity

  • Collaborate with key medical associations and congress convening entities, to identify opportunities to feature the work of BMS Foundation domestically and internationally

Communications Responsibilities:

  • Reputation building by improving awareness and visibility of the Foundation’s philanthropic activities internally and externally – including representing the Foundation at key national and international gatherings, conferences, meetings, etc., and driving content for distribution across various online and offline channels.

  • Produce and present senior-level briefings and ongoing reporting and analysis on program progress to the Foundation Board of Directors

  • Work with Corporate Communications to develop and execute Social Media strategy for grant programs that represent the global impact of Foundation programs

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in Public Health, Social Work, MBA or Pharmacy preferred

  • 10+ years of experience in healthcare, health equity, public health, government or public policy; demonstrated experience in philanthropic grantmaking preferred.

  • Experience in evaluating and building strong functional capabilities including strong global project management, nonprofit management, and people management skills with the ability to develop effective action plans and inspire/manage a team.

  • Ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders internally (Senior Leaders and managers across the company and markets) and externally (from large academic health centers to community-based organizations to patient advocacy groups and local/regional governments). Ability to demonstrate strong collaboration and communication skills to influence and drive organizational engagement in a complex matrix environment while navigating complex decision-making and governance processes.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to learn new software systems and grant management reporting platforms. Understanding of monitoring and evaluation for program areas of responsibility.

  • Well-organized with attention to detail and ability to set priorities with limited supervision. Demonstrated ability to problem solve and drive results will be needed.

  • Experience in planning and executing national and international external events.

  • Experience in core functional management activities (planning, budgeting, training, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • Experienced knowledge of healthcare, public health, and the pharmaceutical industry

  • Understanding of the grant making and grant management process

  • A high level of passion and motivation with an ability to manage several projects simultaneously and prioritize accordingly

  • Astute understanding of company strategy and the purpose for an aligned philanthropic strategy, as well as awareness of compliance issues

  • Strong people skills including demonstrated experience working in a highly matrixed and international organization

  • Budget and project management experience

  • Ability to be an independent decision maker

Desired areas of Competence:

  • Knowledge of health disparities related to cancer in the US and Asia

  • Knowledge of chronic disease and comorbidities affecting cancer patients

  • Knowledge of public health strategies to addressing health disparities

  • Knowledge of implementation science, health service delivery, operational and outcomes research

  • Knowledge of health care financing and reimbursement mechanisms

  • Knowledge of advocacy and health policy as related to addressing health disparities
