Astronomer designed Astro, a modern data orchestration platform, powered by Apache Airflow™. Astro enables companies to place Apache Airflow at the core of their data operations, providing ease of use, scalability, and enterprise-grade security, to ensure the reliable delivery of mission-critical data pipelines.

We’re a globally-distributed and rapidly growing venture-backed team of learners, innovators and collaborators. Our mission is to build an Enterprise-grade product that makes it easy for data teams at Fortune 500’s and startups alike to adopt Apache Airflow. As a member of our team, you will be at the forefront of the industry as we strive to deliver the world's data.

Your background may be unconventional; as long as you have the essential qualifications, we encourage you to apply. While having "bonus" qualifications makes for a strong candidate, Astronomer values diverse experiences. Many of us at Astronomer haven't followed traditional career paths, and we welcome it if yours hasn't either.

About the Role:

Astronomer is looking for a product leader to drive our roadmap around core infrastructure configuration on Astro, Astronomer’s flagship data orchestration cloud service. At its core, Astro is a managed Apache Airflow service that abstracts customers from having to worry about the underlying infrastructure that powers their data pipelines. With that said, the data processing and logic of an Airflow DAG can by definition vary in complexity. While some customers “set it and forget it”, others need to optimize things like worker size and worker node type, and there are rarely one-size-fits-all solutions.

We’re looking for someone to drive our data plane engine roadmap who is passionate about making infrastructure configuration easy. You’ll spend your time answering questions like: What Airflow components can and should we autoscale, and based on what logic? What infrastructure incidents should our customers be alerted on and what should they do about it? How should we price that new component we’re adding to the data plane?

If you have experience with infrastructure products and are interested in taking your technical skill set “above the stack” to make infrastructure decisions a breeze for our end users – this job is for you. We’re looking for someone who has a strong technical background, has a knack for simplifying complex topics, and can drive the team towards solutions in areas that have particularly challenging tradeoffs.

If done well, customers fall in love with Astro not just because their mission-critical data runs on time, every time – but because we guide users through every step of the way.

What you get to do:

  • Define the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for the data plane engine team on Astro. You will build for a combination of the DevOps engineer, the platform admin, and the data engineer.

  • Develop detailed use cases and product requirements, working closely with the engineering team through design, development, testing, and release.

  • Work with the biggest organizations around the world to build the configurability they need to support compute-heavy, mission-critical use cases with AI/ML.

  • Research, synthesize, and learn from cloud providers and other world-class developer infrastructure products in the market.

  • Support product marketing and sales enablement to craft compelling messaging and enablement assets around the improvements we make in this area.

  • Collaborate with Astronomer’s customer-facing technical teams to get connected to the right customers, understand day-to-day pain points, and get their input on the roadmap.

  • Partner closely with Solutions, Customer Support, and SRE teams at Astronomer to understand infrastructure usage patterns and codify their workarounds and recommendations.

  • Regularly present your vision, challenges, and learnings in company, executive, and external industry forums.

What you bring to the role:

  • 3+ years of product management experience building developer infrastructure products or equivalent software engineering experience.

  • Experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and cloud provider infrastructure.

  • An ability to both think big and sweat the details.

  • A knack for distilling complex problems and solutions into simple, compelling, and digestible written material and verbal presentations.

  • A strong ability to synthesize information from customers, prospects, open source users, and industry trends to build an actionable, data-driven roadmap.

  • A bias for action and execution that drives you to set clear priorities, break down big rock features into week-to-week action items, and define deadlines.

  • High empathy, humility, curiosity, and a default to listening and asking questions first.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Familiarity with Apache Airflow or other orchestration and data engineering tooling.

  • Experience managing pricing models for consumption-based infrastructure products.

  • Experience building observability experiences for infrastructure products.

  • Interest or passion for open source projects and communities.

The estimated salary for this role ranges from $180,000 - $210,000, along with an equity component. This range is merely an estimate, and the width of the range reflects willingness to consider candidates with broad prior seniority. Actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
