The AVP Underwriting, Inland Marine will support their assigned region and grow our Inland Marine business profitably with distribution partners through effective underwriting of new business and renewals according to authority level and established guidelines, participate in special projects, and provide training for less experienced staff. This is a Field Underwriting role, in which this position cultivates and expands distribution relationships and new product opportunities, customized to local clients and exposure. This position will concentrate on a specific designated region and encompass production and profitability oversight of a book of business, distribution management and underwriting quality. This role may involve mentoring and leading others, depending on the local regional size and scope. We would expect new business growth of up to $10m, subject to market conditions, within a mutually agreed upon timeframe.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are:

· Owns portfolio results and distribution management for the territory.

· Establish and communicate underwriting profit goals and other measurements including loss ratio, new business development, policy count, account retention, etc.

· Analyze individual risks and book of business results to manage and control underwriting exposure and pricing strategy consistent with company objectives.

· Cultivate and maintain relationships within and outside Argo Group to develop and drive new business opportunities. Work with internal and external business units to develop joint business plans, value propositions and cross-marketing programs.

· Participate in the recruitment and selection process to ensure the organization has the necessary talent to accomplish business goals

· Act as a role model demonstrating belief in, and commitment to, the aspiration values of Argo Group, continuing to build and lead a value-based organization committed to long-term success.

· Ensure fully aware and informed of the evolving economic and insurance marketplace to ensure understand underwriting trends, legal developments and concerns.

· Participate in special projects and assignments as requested.

Core qualifications and requirements for this position include:

· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and 8 years underwriting experience with experience underwriting and marketing or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Minimum of 7-10 years of dedicated Inland Marine underwriting with clear progression of scope and responsibility

· Experience managing a book of at least $5M.

· Proven leadership capabilities with a sound influence in dealing with challenging situations.

· Independent decision maker – takes full responsibility for making decisions and consequences associated with decisions.

· Have established relationships with external clients and professional network.

· Experience developing guidelines preferred.

· Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process.

· Adept at risk selection, exposure evaluation and ability to rate, quote and sell admitted and non-admitted solutions for Marine lines of business.

· Excellent organization skills, very strong analytical, oral and written communication skills required. The ability to meet tight deadlines is essential.

· Strong customer service with a professional attitude and approach needed.

· Ability to interact and communicate with various levels of the organization to cross-sell or address processing requirements.

· Continually seeks opportunities for niche products and potential agent opportunities., including local distribution relationships within the region

· Experience in delivering presentations to internal and external audiences.

· Requires demonstrated experience in developing and implementing an annual department business plan.

· Ability to travel as needed, and with short notice.

The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package.

Colorado outside of Denver metro, Maryland, Nevada, and Rhode Island Pay Ranges: $166,300-$211,600

California outside of San Francisco metro area, Connecticut, Denver metro area, Washington State, and New York State (including Westchester County) Pay Ranges: $182,800-$232,600

New York City and San Francisco metro areas Pay Ranges: $199,500-$253,900
