About Amrut

Amrut Distilleries Ltd is an Indian company that produces alcoholic beverages, best known for its Amrut brand of single malt whisky. The company was founded in Bangalore in 1948 by J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale. Initially, Amrut Distilleries supplied Indian Made Liquor (IML) to the armed forces and also produced arrack, a popular local spirit. Over the decades, the company expanded its portfolio and began focusing on premium spirits. The current Chairman and Managing Director is Neelakanta Rao Jagdale, and his son, Rakshit N Jagdale, serves as the Managing Director.

The turning point for Amrut Distilleries came with the launch of Amrut Single Malt Whisky in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 24, 2004. This marked the first time an Indian single malt whisky was introduced to the global market. The whisky is made from Indian barley grown at the foothills of the Himalayas and is distilled and matured in Bangalore. The unique climatic conditions of Bangalore, with its high altitude and tropical weather, contribute to a faster maturation process compared to traditional Scotch whiskies. Amrut's single malts have since gained international acclaim, winning numerous awards and recognition from whisky connoisseurs worldwide, including a rating of 82 (out of 100) for Amrut Peated Single Malt Whisky from renowned whisky critic Jim Murray in his Whisky Bible. The company's product range also includes other spirits like rum, brandy, and vodka, catering to both domestic and international markets. Amrut Distilleries continues to innovate and expand its presence, solidifying its reputation as a pioneer of Indian single malt whisky.
