R&D Strategy and Operations (RDSO) is focused on driving innovation beyond the molecule and applying digital strategies to simplify processes, improve success rates, accelerating pipeline progression, ultimately expediting the path to patient value and access. The Director of R&D Knowledge Management will be primarily responsible for evolving and managing R&D’s knowledge management capability that is comprised of equal parts digital enablement, advancing a culture that shares the things that matter, and deploying thoughtfully designed processes when needed to capture and surface knowledge, with a preference towards seamlessly integrating into the flow of work as a first priority.

The Director of Knowledge Management will lead a team of knowledge management professionals, who oversee the creation and delivery of knowledge products and services across R&D. This leader will drive a culture of knowledge sharing and discovery, while aligning with and influencing cross-functional efforts to develop and advance solutions with an enterprise mindset. This role will report into the Head of R&D Knowledge & Learning, and will be a peer to R&D learning & performance leaders and the lead for Amgen’s corporate library.

The Director of R&D Knowledge Management will lead their team to focus on understanding the needs of specific roles across R&D and as solutions are delivered, measure and articulate the value. They will work in close alignment with functional leaders, transformation leads, enterprise technology teams, and learning and development teams to collaboratively explore and co-create solutions, with a focus on enabling R&D strategic capabilities and progressing prioritized initiatives.

This leader will be a visionary in terms of how the field of knowledge management is evolving with the rapidly changing technology landscape and will effectively communicate the opportunities this presents to a diverse audience of leaders and staff across R&D to build support for and align efforts to maximize the value and scalability of solutions. They will provide leadership in championing a culture across R&D that recognizes and prioritizes efforts to unlock the value of Amgen’s tacit and explicit knowledge, while working in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment, leading a team that is able to adapt and shift to meet the needs of the business.

Responsibilities

This role will be an inspirational leader for a team of direct reports as well as cross-functional teams:

  • Lead the evolution and implementation of the R&D knowledge management strategy, platforms and processes, ensuring alignment to functional and corporate priorities
  • Influence and align cross functional partners and initiatives to integrate ongoing efforts to contribute to a broader knowledge strategy
  • Create an awareness and understanding of KM principles and how they can impact the performance of the R&D organization
  • Work with Senior Leadership to establish KM as a priority business objective for R&D and establish a culture that embraces it
  • Create an awareness of and actively shape the behaviors and culture needed to promote KM while guiding and supporting individuals/teams in embracing a change in behavioral style
  • Partner with enterprise technology teams to ensure technology solutions to enable KM are implemented/maintained
  • Define how to measure and reward the organization along with KM goals that align with organizational objectives
  • Steer the internal KM practice/program, modeling desired behaviors by being visible as a leader and member of both internal and external communities
  • Evaluate performance metrics against defined success factors, institute actions to correct shortcomings or further streamline processes, and prioritize expansion activities
  • Lead the identification of opportunities to further automate the extraction and curation of new information and ways to increase the utility and impact of KM solutions
  • Establish an ongoing staff engagement strategy/plan and oversee internal communications
  • Collaborate with and influence business process owners and/or functions to leverage KM best practices/processes to capture and leverage data, information, and knowledge
  • Engage with other KM leaders (both internal and external to Amgen) to further the development of, sharing, and adoption of KM best practices and lessons learned

This position is currently located in our corporate headquarters, located in Thousand Oaks, CA, but alternative locations will be considered for the right candidate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 4 years of related experience Or
  • Master’s degree and 8 years of related experience Or
  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of related experience

In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have at least 4 years of experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation of resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in systems-based transformation, program and/or portfolio management in a pharmaceutical industry
  • Broad understanding of the R&D, drug development, and commercialization process
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), FDA regulations and guidelines, and applicable international regulatory requirements
  • Leadership experience in building and developing high performing teams, delivering results and shaping the future
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility with and influence VP/SVP level staff
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and document complex concepts in both written and oral communication
  • History of solving problems while exhibiting superior judgment and a balanced, realistic understanding of issues
  • Toolsets/skills required to drive organizational change
  • Finance and budget management experience
  • Expert integrator across people, process and systems
  • Strong understanding of principals of customer service and relationship management as it applies to internal customers and external partners
  • Project planning and management
  • Strong data science, data analysis or data management with familiarity of big data, analytics

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
