Songo Ambie-Barango

I’m an “Energy Professional (Ex-Shell)” and independent technical consultant with over 40 years of experience in technical leadership roles across Operations and Maintenance Management in Upstream, Downstream, and Midstream Oil and Gas. I’ve worked as a project and operations engineer with Delta Steel Company (Aladja, Nigeria) and MECON India, and later led operational performance and maintenance integrity with NAFCON/NOTORE Fertilisers and Chemicals.

My Shell experience included leadership and assignments in maintenance and operations, HSE leadership assignments and reviews, and ultimately serving at the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) in Accra, Ghana. Seconded from Shell Nigeria Gas, I served as Operations and Maintenance Superintendent, overseeing the overall technical and safe operations of the WAGP in Ghana and Togo, with central monitoring oversight responsibility for Nigeria and Benin Republic gas pipeline assets. I also championed Reliability/Efficiency and Safe Operations through WAPCo Operational Excellence Management Systems (OEMS), supporting procedures, training, coaching, and role-based assurance across the value chain.

Since 10/2020, I’ve worked independently on gas-based feasibility, process safety, and safe operations assurance, while serving part-time as Director of Operations, ADH Engineering and Construction Limited, and as Consultant/Operations SME on Gas-Based Industries for Bekos Energy Services. I’ve delivered feasibility studies (including 100–200 MMSCF/D gas sourcing and infrastructure development for ammonia/urea and methanol/ammonia/urea), conducted PSSR/Facility Audit work to enable approval for first oil export, and prepared technical/safe operations training proposals and staff training on Process Safety and Safe Operations. As an HSE/asset integrity leader, I’ve led and supported audits, incident investigations (RCA), HAZOP/RE-HAZOP, PSSR, and reliability-driven safety initiatives—building competence and embedment through systems such as PTW/LOTO/hot work controls and contractor HSE assurance.
