Rik Claes
@rikclaes
Astrophysicist with expertise in research and data analysis.
What I'm looking for
I am an astrophysicist with four years of experience in research and data analysis, specializing in the development of reusable Python tools for analyzing large datasets. My work has focused on tackling complex problems with an analytical and detail-oriented approach, particularly in the realm of AI and neural networks.
During my PhD at the European Southern Observatory, I modeled broad wavelength range spectra and led two papers to publication in esteemed journals. I have a strong background in querying astronomical databases using SQL and employing statistical techniques to test hypotheses. My ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences has been honed through presentations at international conferences.
In addition to my research, I have developed innovative methods for image reconstruction using Python and TensorFlow, contributing to the advancement of astronomical data analysis. I am passionate about leveraging my skills in data visualization and machine learning to further explore the mysteries of the universe.

Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
PhD Researcher
European Southern Observatory
Sep 2021 - Nov 2024 (3 years 2 months)
As a PhD Researcher, I focused on constraining the evolution of protoplanetary disks through their accretion properties. I modeled broad wavelength range spectra, led publications, and worked with large datasets using Python, SQL, and statistical techniques. I managed projects independently and communicated complex concepts at international conferences.
Research Assistant
Institute of Astronomy, KU Leuven
Aug 2020 - Dec 2020 (4 months)
As a Research Assistant, I developed a new Python/TensorFlow method for image reconstruction of optical/near-IR interferometric data. I worked on a publication detailing this framework and presented it at the SPIE Astronomical Telescope & Instrumentation 2020 digital forum.
