Cecilia Erasmus

I work at the intersection of Afrikaans linguistics and voice. My doctoral research focused on modality in Afrikaans—how modal auxiliaries express possibility, permission, obligation, and intention—using construction grammar and a corpus spanning a hundred years.

I annotated and classified large volumes of Afrikaans text against fine-grained parameters to track meaning, usage shifts across contexts, and change over time—work built for accurate language evaluation and refining AI-generated text.

Alongside linguistics, I’m a classically trained operatic vocalist and recording artist. I’ve released three commercial CDs (one nominated for a national South African music award) and coach singers and casts on diction, projection, pacing, tone, and emotional delivery.

For more than seventeen years I’ve taught Afrikaans at secondary and tertiary levels, including lecturing undergraduate Afrikaans linguistics at the University of Antwerp. Today, I also provide registered counselling and career guidance, including psychometric assessment and university support.
