I'm a backend engineer based in Kampala with about 8 years of experience, mainly in Python APIs, databases, and data pipelines. Since 2021 I've worked on AI products deployed on customers' own servers, including offline environments.
From 2021 to 2026 I was at Rigr AI, working on the Video Summarization Tool, which police forces and companies use to process video and audio. I was responsible for the backend: the APIs, the processing pipeline for large media files, testing, and bug fixes. I did much of the manual QA, including reproducing reported bugs, testing fixes end to end, and checking releases. The tool used Whisper, PyAnnote, facenet-pytorch, and OCR, served through NVIDIA Triton on GPUs. Because customers ran it on their own hardware, I spent a lot of time on deployments and remote debugging. I also handled demos and support calls with customers.
At Rigr I also managed the company's part in ARICA, a two-year EU-funded project with European police and university partners. I contributed to the grant proposal, ran stand-ups, and tracked deliverables. I also did outreach to police agencies and hosted four webinars.
Before that I was lead backend engineer at HiveOnline, a Danish fintech working with people who have limited access to banks. I built APIs and services in FastAPI and PostgreSQL, deployed on GCP with Docker, and mentored junior engineers. Earlier, I built transport analytics dashboards for Rwanda's utilities regulator and automated risk reporting at Compuscan, a credit bureau.
Main tools: Python, FastAPI, Django, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Docker, Terraform, GitHub Actions, Azure, and GCP. I've also used MySQL, MongoDB, Flask, and React.
I have an MSc in Data Science and Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University Africa and a BSc in Software Engineering from Makerere. I've co-organised WiMLDS Kampala since 2019, run the Django Girls workshop at PyCon Kampala, and given talks there on serving AI models through APIs.
