Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Sugarcane Research Scientist to join our innovative agricultural research team. In this role, you will leverage cutting-edge molecular biology techniques and agronomic practices to advance sugarcane productivity, sustainability, and disease resistance. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate scientific discoveries into practical applications that benefit farmers and the sugar industry.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute research experiments to investigate sugarcane genetics, breeding techniques, and agronomic practices.
- Analyze data and communicate findings through reports, publications, and presentations to stakeholders.
- Develop and implement strategies for improving sugarcane yield, quality, and disease resistance.
- Collaborate with agricultural extension services to disseminate research findings and support field trials.
- Stay abreast of advances in sugarcane research and integrate best practices into ongoing projects.
- Mentor and guide junior researchers and interns in research methodologies and data analysis.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Ph.D. in Plant Science, Agronomy, or a related field with a focus on sugarcane or similar crops.
- 3+ years of experience in agricultural research, specifically in sugarcane genetics or breeding.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in statistical software such as R or SAS for data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred:
- Experience with molecular breeding techniques, including marker-assisted selection.
- Familiarity with field trial design and implementation, as well as agronomic assessments.
- Knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices and the ability to apply them in research.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing.
- Proficiency in data management and analysis tools, including bioinformatics software.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis of agricultural data.
