Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced General Counsel to join our dynamic team within the sports industry. In this strategic role, you will lead the legal function, providing comprehensive legal guidance across all aspects of our business operations, including contract negotiations, compliance, intellectual property matters, and risk management.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support to senior management and various departments on a wide range of legal issues, including corporate governance, licensing agreements, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead contract negotiations and drafting for sponsorship agreements, vendor contracts, and other key partnerships.
- Manage intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks and copyrights, ensuring proper protections are in place.
- Oversee compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including those specific to the sports industry.
- Monitor changes in legislation and industry trends that may impact the organization, providing proactive guidance to mitigate legal risks.
- Coordinate with external legal counsel on complex legal matters, litigation, and disputes.
- Develop and implement internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- A minimum of 8 years of legal experience, with significant exposure to corporate law, contract negotiation, and compliance.
- Experience in the sports industry or related sectors is strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred:
- Experience with regulatory matters specific to the sports industry, including anti-doping regulations and player contracts.
- Proven track record of successfully managing legal risks in high-stakes negotiations.
- Membership in a state bar association and eligibility to practice law in relevant jurisdictions.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in contract management software and legal research tools.
- Strong understanding of intellectual property law as it pertains to sports.
- Familiarity with compliance software and risk management frameworks.
