Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Chief City Attorney to lead our legal department in providing expert legal counsel to the city administration, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws. This role involves strategic leadership in municipal law, oversight of legal matters, and the ability to navigate complex legal issues impacting city governance and operations.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic legal guidance and support to city officials, departments, and agencies on a wide range of municipal law issues.
- Oversee the preparation and review of legal documents, contracts, and agreements to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
- Lead and manage the legal team, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Represent the city in legal proceedings, including litigation, negotiations, and administrative hearings.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance across city operations.
- Collaborate with external counsel and stakeholders on significant legal matters and initiatives.
- Monitor and analyze legislative developments, advising city officials on potential impacts.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- 10+ years of experience in municipal law or related fields, with a focus on local government legal issues.
- Active bar membership in good standing.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in managing legal teams and complex legal matters.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to provide clear and concise legal advice.
Preferred:
- Experience working with government entities or public agencies.
- Knowledge of administrative law, land use, zoning, and public finance.
- Proven track record in litigation, including trial experience.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in municipal law, contracts, and regulatory compliance.
- Proficient in legal research tools and case management software.
- Strong understanding of public sector legal issues and city operations.
