Role Overview
We are looking for a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) to join our team in providing high-quality interpreting services for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. In this fully remote role, you will leverage your expertise in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture to facilitate effective communication in a variety of settings, ensuring accessibility and inclusion for all clients.
Responsibilities
- Provide interpretation services for a diverse range of settings, including medical, legal, educational, and community events.
- Collaborate with hearing interpreters and other professionals to ensure accurate and culturally appropriate communication.
- Utilize your knowledge of Deaf culture to advocate for the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing clients.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times, adhering to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Engage in continuous professional development to enhance interpreting practices and stay updated with industry standards.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Certification as a Deaf Interpreter (CDI) from a recognized accrediting body.
- Proven experience in interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals across various contexts.
- Strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of Deaf culture.
- Excellent communication skills, both in ASL and English.
Preferred:
- Experience working in specialized fields such as legal or medical interpretation.
- Knowledge of additional sign languages or communication methods.
- Familiarity with remote interpreting technologies and platforms.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in the use of video conferencing tools and remote interpreting platforms.
- Ability to adapt to various communication styles and needs of clients.
- Experience with note-taking and documentation related to interpreting services.
Soft Skills and Cultural Fit
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with clients and colleagues.
- Empathy and understanding of the unique challenges faced by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
