AI Interview Practice

The Himalayas AI Mock Interview tool simulates real job interviews so you can practice before the real thing. Choose text-based interviews with structured questions and detailed feedback, or conversational voice interviews for a realistic real-time experience. One free session included; unlimited with Himalayas Plus ($9/month).

How does AI interview practice work?

The interview tool creates a realistic mock interview tailored to a specific job and company. You select a position you are preparing for, and the AI generates relevant interview questions based on the job description, required skills, and company context.

There are two modes:

  1. Classic (text-based): Structured Q&A with 5 questions per session, written answers, and detailed feedback on each response
  2. Conversational (voice): Real-time spoken conversation with an AI interviewer, simulating the experience of a live interview call

Both modes help you practice answering interview questions and identify weak spots before the actual interview.

How do text-based (classic) interviews work?

Classic interviews follow a structured format:

  1. Select or create an interview: Choose a company and job you want to prepare for. You can create an interview from a Himalayas job listing or enter details manually.
  2. Start a session: Each session contains 5 interview questions tailored to the role.
  3. Answer questions: You type your answer to each question one at a time.
  4. Receive feedback: After submitting each answer, the AI provides:
    • Feedback: A critical analysis of your response, covering content quality, structure, relevance, and communication
    • Exemplar answer: An example of what an excellent response to that question looks like
    • Rating: A score from 0 to 3 (displayed as a percentage) evaluating the quality of your answer
  5. View your score: At the end of the session, you see your overall performance score based on all 5 questions.

You can run multiple sessions on the same interview to track improvement over time. Each session generates fresh questions that build on your previous performance — the AI avoids repeating questions and focuses on areas where you can improve.

How is the score calculated?

Two scores are tracked:

  • Performance score: The average rating across questions you answered (skipped questions are excluded)
  • Overall score: The average rating including skipped questions (counted as 0 points)

Scores are displayed as percentages. If you achieve a score of 30% or higher, the system celebrates your progress.

How do conversational (voice) interviews work?

Conversational interviews use voice technology to simulate a real-time phone or video interview. You speak into your microphone, and an AI interviewer responds conversationally, just as a real interviewer would.

  1. Start a conversational session: Requires a microphone and a Plus or Max subscription
  2. Have a real conversation: The AI asks questions, listens to your answers, follows up, and probes deeper, just like a human interviewer would
  3. Maximum duration: Sessions can last up to 20 minutes
  4. Get a summary: After the session ends, you receive:
    • Full conversation transcript with timestamps
    • Overall score (0–100)
    • What went well
    • Areas for improvement
    • Suggested next steps
    • Your average response time

What context does the AI interviewer have?

The conversational AI prepares for your interview using:

  • The job title, company name, and full job description
  • Your name, location, skills, and interested roles
  • Your recent work experience (up to 3 past positions)
  • Feedback from your previous sessions on the same job (to track growth and avoid repetition)
  • Patterns from your interviews at other companies (to identify cross-cutting strengths and weaknesses)

This means the AI becomes a better interviewer the more you practice. It learns your patterns and focuses on where you struggle.

How many practice interviews can I do?

PlanClassic (text) sessionsConversational (voice)
Free1 sessionNot available
Plus ($9/mo)Unlimited30 minutes/month
Max ($29/mo)Unlimited4 hours/month

On the free tier, you get one classic interview session (5 questions with feedback). This is a good way to try the feature before subscribing.

What if I used my free mock interview on an expired job?

This happens occasionally — you use your one free interview session on a job that turns out to be expired or no longer accepting applications.

If this happens, email hi@himalayas.app and explain the situation. The team can reset your free interview credit so you can practice for another role.

With Himalayas Plus, classic sessions are unlimited — you can practice as many times as you want for as many different jobs as you want. Conversational voice interviews are credit-based, with 30 minutes per month on Plus and 4 hours per month on Max.

How do voice interview credits work?

Conversational interview credits are measured in seconds. When you start a voice session, your remaining credits are consumed as the session runs. You receive warnings when you have 120 seconds remaining and again at 30 seconds remaining. You need at least 120 seconds of credits to start a new voice session.

Can I prepare for a specific company and job?

Yes. Every interview on Himalayas is tied to a specific company and job. When you create a new interview, you provide:

  • The company name
  • The job title
  • The job description (or a link to the listing)

The AI uses this information to generate questions that are directly relevant to the role. For example, if you are preparing for a senior engineering role at a fintech company, the questions will focus on technical skills, system design, leadership, and domain knowledge relevant to that context — not generic interview questions.

You can create multiple interviews for different companies and jobs, and switch between them at any time.

What kinds of questions does the AI ask?

The AI generates questions based on the job requirements and your profile. These typically include:

  • Behavioral questions: "Tell me about a time when..." scenarios that assess soft skills, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving
  • Technical questions: Role-specific questions about skills, tools, and methodologies listed in the job description
  • Situational questions: Hypothetical scenarios relevant to the role ("How would you handle...")
  • Motivational questions: Why you are interested in the role, the company, or the industry
  • Experience-based questions: Questions about your specific background and how it relates to the position

Each session generates 5 fresh questions. The AI avoids repeating questions from previous sessions on the same job and adapts based on your performance — if you consistently score well on behavioral questions but struggle with technical ones, subsequent sessions will include more technical challenges.

Can I review my previous answers?

Yes. All your interview sessions are saved and accessible from your interviews dashboard. For each past session, you can review:

  • The questions that were asked
  • Your answers
  • The AI's feedback and exemplar answers
  • Your score on each question
  • Your overall session score

This makes it easy to track your progress over time and revisit feedback before your actual interview.

Tips for getting the most from mock interviews

Practice with the actual job description. Copy the full job description into your interview setup. The more context the AI has, the more relevant and realistic the questions will be.

Treat it like a real interview. For classic mode, write complete, thoughtful answers rather than bullet points. For conversational mode, find a quiet space, use a good microphone, and answer as if you were on a real call.

Do multiple sessions. The AI improves with each session. Your first attempt surfaces baseline performance; subsequent sessions target your weak points and track improvement.

Review the exemplar answers. Even if you scored well, reading the exemplar answer often reveals techniques and framings you had not considered. These are especially valuable for behavioral questions.

Use both modes. Classic mode is great for crafting polished answers you can memorize key points from. Conversational mode is great for building comfort with the pressure and pace of a live interview. Used together, they cover both content preparation and delivery practice.
