Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400
enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) is accepting applications for an Assistant Registrar. The Assistant Registrar provides back up to the Registrar for day-to-day operational oversight and effectiveness of the Office. Additional key responsibilities exist in the areas of Compliance and Reporting, Procurement and Budgetary Support, and Student Information Processing. Maintains the necessary requirements to act as the School Certifying Official for Veterans Benefits when needed.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
• Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and follow policies, requirements, and procedures.
• Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet established deadlines
• Skills in researching and resolving questions and problems.
• Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, college
population, and general public. Excellent human relations skills with the ability to handle difficult customer service problems. Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with persons from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
• Excellent skills in computers and related software including word, spreadsheet, and database.
• Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to perform detailed audit of student records.
• Ability to perform data collection, analysis, and evaluation.
• Regular and prompt attendance is an essential element in the efficient operation of the Records Office. Must be able to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Additional Considerations
• Knowledge of VCCS and VWCC policies, requirements, and procedures preferred.
• Experience using a Student Information System preferred.
• Experience working in a college's student services environment preferred.
• Community college experience preferred.
