Both companies transferred their entire HIV portfolios and pipelines to this new, independent entity, creating a specialist company 100% dedicated to HIV medicines and research. The vision was clear from the outset: to take a deeper and broader interest in HIV and AIDS than any single company had done before, and to adopt an innovative approach to delivering effective treatments and care for people living with the virus.

This journey of focused innovation was further strengthened in 2012 when Shionogi, a Japanese pharmaceutical company, joined the venture. This addition brought even more depth to ViiV's research and development capabilities, particularly in the area of integrase inhibitors.
