About the Role

We’re seeking a detail-driven and highly capable Back-End Software Engineer to join our engineering team and contribute to the core systems powering VFX’s global financial infrastructure. You will work across complex, high-value domains including multi-currency account architecture, payment routing, treasury operations, risk management, compliance workflows, and API-driven client integrations.

This role is suited to someone who brings discipline, precision, and a strong engineering mindset. You will thrive if you enjoy building resilient, scalable and secure systems that serve sophisticated clients operating across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory environments. This is an opportunity to deepen your expertise within a regulated FinTech while making a tangible impact across a platform used by global businesses.

This role can be hybrid at our office in Portimao or fully remote across Portugal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering, product, operational SMEs, and wider stakeholders to translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions.

  • Architect, implement, and rigorously test high-quality .NET applications with a focus on performance, reliability, and scalability.

  • Produce clean, maintainable, and well-documented code aligned with VFX engineering standards.

  • Proactively identify and remediate defects through detailed root-cause analysis.

  • Maintain and enhance existing applications, ensuring resilience and operational efficiency across our .NET ecosystem.

  • Conduct peer code reviews to ensure quality, maintainability, and adherence to engineering best practices.

  • Create comprehensive technical documentation to support future development, onboarding, and architectural clarity.

  • Remain current with emerging .NET technologies and best practices, implementing improvements that strengthen the competitiveness and robustness of our platform.

  • Embed security principles directly into the codebase, addressing risks proactively.

  • Partner with QA teams on test planning and execution to uphold VFX’s high software quality standards.

  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, contributing to predictable delivery, improved collaboration, and continuous improvement across sprints.

Key Challenges

  • Building and maintaining enterprise-grade backend systems within a regulated financial environment.

  • Translating complex financial concepts — payments, FX, reconciliation, treasury workflows —into robust engineering solutions.

  • Balancing speed, innovation, and long-term stability across critical systems.

  • Managing competing priorities across stakeholders, systems, and domain areas.

  • Ensuring scalability, security, and operational consistency in a rapidly evolving environment.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrates technical rigor, attention to detail, and ownership of outcomes.

  • Able to operate with clarity in complex environments, navigating ambiguity with composure.

  • Communicates confidently across technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Thrives in agile, iterative delivery environments, contributing proactively to team performance.

  • Approaches engineering with discipline and pride, ensuring solutions are secure, reliable, and future-proof.

  • Works effectively both independently and within a high-performing team.

Preferred Background

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in .NET development, delivering scalable, production-grade applications.

  • Strong proficiency in DDD, CQRS, and clean architecture with practical application in prior projects.

  • Solid experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and integration layers.

  • Proficient in unit testing frameworks (NUnit, xUnit) and mocking tools (NSubstitute, Moq).

  • Strong SQL Server or relational database experience, including schema design and performance optimization.

  • Skilled in Git-based version control workflows, including branching strategies and code review processes.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in fast-paced, agile engineering environments.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience building and maintaining DevOps pipelines, ideally using GitHub Actions.

  • Exposure to messaging technologies such as Azure Service Bus or gRPC.

  • Previous experience in the financial sector and familiarity with industry-specific constraints.

  • Practical use of tools like Jira within Agile delivery frameworks.

Success Measures

  • Delivery of secure, high-quality, high-performance .NET features that support business and client objectives.

  • A maintainable, well-structured codebase aligned with VFX’s architectural standards.

  • Positive feedback from engineering peers, testers, product owners, and operational stakeholders.

  • Reduced defects, improved stability, and enhanced system performance.

  • Demonstrable contribution to sprint predictability, velocity, and cross-team alignment.

  • Strict adherence to regulatory, security, and operational standards.
