Trinseo's story begins not in a garage, but as a collection of well-established businesses within the Dow Chemical Company. In 2009, Dow made the strategic decision to group several of its divisions, including styrenics, polycarbonate, and synthetic rubber, for a potential sale. This marked the genesis of what would become a new force in the materials industry. The following year, in 2010, the private equity firm Bain Capital acquired these holdings for $1.63 billion, and the newly independent entity was christened Styron. The company's full independence as a public company was achieved in 2016 when Bain Capital sold its remaining stake.
