Australia only

The Spectator is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious magazines. Renowned for its incisive commentary, engaging features and thought-provoking opinions on politics, culture and current affairs, The Spectator has a proud history of fostering great journalism — and is now building on that legacy with new products, expanded digital coverage and innovative ways to engage and grow our audience around the world.

Position Overview

The Spectator is expanding its global editorial operation and is seeking a talented and self-sufficient Night Editor to join our growing team. Based in Sydney (or the surrounding region), this remote role provides vital overnight coverage for The Spectator’s UK and global operations — ensuring that newsletters are drafted, the news agenda is monitored, and breaking stories are surfaced while London sleeps.

Working closely with our editorial and production teams in London, you will play a key role in transforming our newsletter output and strengthening our round-the-clock news operation. This role is ideal for someone with excellent editorial judgement, strong writing and editing skills, and a sharp eye for news and current affairs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and prepare The Spectator’s flagship newsletters for the following morning’s distribution
  • Monitor breaking news and identify key stories and developments during overnight UK hours
  • Conduct newsgathering across global and UK news sources, providing clear overnight briefings to London teams
  • Draft early versions of stories, headlines and summaries for editorial refinement on handover
  • Collaborate with editors, writers and production staff to maintain The Spectator’s tone, accuracy and editorial standards
  • Perform light editing, fact-checking and proofreading during overnight hours
  • Assist in managing and updating the website with breaking news or developing stories if required

Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of The Spectator’s editorial voice and audience
  • A strong interest and knowledge of British politics, current affairs and culture — with the ability to assess news value overnight
  • Experience in newsletter production and/or digital publishing strongly preferred
  • Strong writing and headline-writing skills, with an ability to capture The Spectator’s distinctive tone
  • Excellent editorial judgement, attention to detail and accuracy
  • The ability to work independently and take responsibility for overnight editorial output
  • Strong time management and organisational skills
  • A sense of humour and a well-developed sense of the absurd

This role is fully remote, but requires you to be based in Australia or a nearby time zone to align with UK overnight hours. We have an existing team in Sydney, so proximity to Sydney would be an advantage.

For readers who find themselves navigating a complex and often noisy world, The Spectator serves as a trusted guide, offering clarity, wit, and a distinctive perspective on politics, culture, and current affairs. Since its establishment in 1828, the magazine has been dedicated to providing its audience with more than just news; it delivers intelligent, thought-provoking, and entertaining commentary that cuts through the noise. Our customers, who are often influential leaders and thinkers themselves, appreciate that our writers are not bound by a party line. Instead, their sole allegiance is to originality of thought and elegance of expression. This commitment ensures that readers are consistently exposed to a diverse range of opinions, from the left to the right, and from high life to low life, all presented with an unflinching and often irreverent style. Our motto, 'firm, but unfair,' reflects our dedication to providing a unique and stimulating reading experience, rather than a bland echo of prevailing sentiments.

We understand that our readers demand depth and substance, which is why we delve into the inner workings of Downing Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, and beyond, offering analysis that is both insightful and influential. Whether it's through our weekly print magazine, our daily online content, or our engaging podcasts and events, we cater to a desire for journalism that is both serious and enjoyable. The Spectator is designed to be more like a stimulating cocktail party than a rigid political forum—a place for those who appreciate exceptional writing, contentious opinion, and hard-hitting commentary. Our readers might not always agree with every perspective presented, but they are guaranteed to find the content engaging, amusing, and, above all, exceptionally well-written. By consistently featuring Britain's finest columnists, critics, and cartoonists, we ensure our audience receives unfiltered views at cask strength, helping them to stay not just informed, but truly engaged with the world around them.
