The Lawyering Project

The Lawyering Project is a national legal advocacy organization that uses the law to improve abortion access and uphold the rights and dignity of people seeking and providing reproductive health care. Founded in 2017, the organization blends traditional impact litigation with movement lawyering to promote reproductive health, rights, and justice throughout the United States. In many states across the country, people seeking abortion care are subject to medically unnecessary requirements that create barriers to access, assault people's dignity, and entrench discriminatory norms about gender.

The organization's mission is to eliminate laws that undermine reproductive health, rights, and justice - laws that deprive people of moral agency, rob them of control over their bodies, and compound other forms of oppression including racism, sexism, and poverty. The Lawyering Project is especially focused on laws that limit the availability or affordability of abortion care, contribute to disparities in reproductive health outcomes, embody gender-based stereotypes, or discriminate against people based on their reproductive decisions. Their goal is a legal system that enables each person to make decisions about intensely personal matters like sex, pregnancy, family, and health care based on their own beliefs and values - and ensures that everyone has the resources needed to carry those decisions out.
